Yesterday I recieved my acmp 81's.
First thoughts when opening the box........Build quality from the outside appears legitimate.
The casing is tough metal/steel, pots are smooth on both units, XLR in and Out's also speak of decent quality.
I took them to the studio around 6pm to track some guitar.
I wanted to use 2 mics I am familiar with, I was tracking a Danolectro through a fender Blues Deluxe.
I was using an SM57 and a AKG d112
When just using the pre amp stage the gain is nice and clear, pretty "full sounding" I wouldn't say warm, but full.
I was running around 40db on input on both channels and the output was to about 1/4th a turn.
Sound was clear.
I noticed with I would drive the input stage a little more and turn down the output, I could get more of a "saturation" and then push it to distortion, which isn't very pleasant, but that's another note.
EQ stage is very noisey, Instant hum and his as soon as it is turned on. I also noticed that if I turn the EQ stage on and turn the other EQ units off, the hum and hiss stays the same.
Tonight, I am going to start and hopefully finish the transistor swap on atleast one ACMP 81 (gotta hit the gym after leaving the internet for the day)
and take a look into shielding, grouping, and possibly relocating the transformer and PSU.
However first thing is first, gotta get the transistors up to spec.
I do think that the ACMP at least the 81's are more than useable as just a pre without the EQ. Similiar to the John Hardy API sound.
Wish me like!
