Oh, freakin yea! :) I hope this thing is as awesome as everyone says. I just got 2 MD421s too because they are so highly regarded. Man, they kick ass. I just had to brag a little. Sorry

So HangDog, have you actually gotten it in the house yet? I'm curious how it stacks up on vocals, how you would compare it to other vocal mics, etc. I just got an AT4047, but I haven't yet used it enough to say much more than I like what I hear so far.

I really like this mic. It's really smooth and fairly accurate and it EQs really well. It has a really sweet midrange, and I really like the way it sounds on my voice. I wouldn't want that sound on every vocal, but it's a nice color nonetheless. I also really like it on strummed acoustic and love it on amp. The biggest problem with it on amp, though is that it has such a high output, you can clip the inputs of your preamp if you're not careful. Unfortunately, there's no pad. I'm going to have to get one of those In-line pads by Shure.

Nope don't have it yet. Just bought it today. We shall see though. It'll no doubt be the best mic I own. Although I got a gt-55 a few months ago and it's really nice.

Well let us know how it suits you, please. I think there's a lot of interest in mics that are better than the $200-$300 level but don't yet reach the $1,000 level..... In fact there's lots of different schools of thought on getting several of the former or just one or two of the latter.....

I just want to know how well it translates vocals thru a warm pre and what if any eq freq'y adjmts have to be made.

Thats the baby. I have one and like it alot. Very clean on vocals, no hype......I like that, good on cabs and acoustic too. As far as eq....here it comes...it depends. I like to put a little 5k and 12 K on vocals. Oh yeah, it compresses very nicely, I use a drawmer de esser and an HHb as well as a focusrite VMP and while its not always my first choice, I do use it often

Yo BK, what is your primary vocal choice? Also, how's that MDB1 FET working out?

I like the ifet alot. It sounds very clean with a little high end push and takes to eq nicely. My go to lately has been at 4033 followed by NTK and baby bottle and the GT 1B tube.

I think evryone should at least try out a baby bottle. It is a nice mic and you can get them used around $250-$300 (got mine for $250).....I have to admit that I didn't like it on dis guit cab, but havent tried it on clean....must do this!

Now i want to try out the Bottle....or at least hear some feedback as to what it offers. I know there is like 8-10 interchangable caps that cost an assload each. Is it worth it???

Okay, this is my first post of many, and I apologise in advance (and probably will do repeatedly) for my questions.

What are the MD421s good for micing up?

I am trying to find some decent overhead drum mics that I can use in the studio I am about to try and build.

I can play music, half-decently, and I know computers very well (hence my choice for a digi card), but mics, outboard gear and desks confuse me completely.

I was thinking about using them as drum overheads - is that ridiculous?

I have never used 421s, but I think the "typical" response will be that small diaphram condenser mics tend to work well for that application, as well as medium and, in some cases, large diaphram condensers.

Most use condensor mics for overheads. The MD421's are dynamic mics. They would be better used for the toms or kick drum. Even better on a guitar cab ( so I hear). And they work well for vocals too. I just bought 2 of them but haven't tried them on anything yet.

I've had my Baby for about six months now and am very impressed with it. Especially for the price range. This is a lot of mic for not a lot of money.

Extremely high output! I've been using 4033's before this and the Bottle blow's 'em away. I've used it on vocals, acoustic, mandolin, fiddle and banjo. I really like it on all of the above except the banjo (good, not great).

I have a UA 610 and an Avalon M5 (can't afford a 737 yet...:( ) and it really cooks through the 610. Sounds equally as good through either. Pre really depends on the source material.

IMHO, it's a damn good all-around affordable mic to have in the studio.

heh, never knew that - I thought they were condensers

I apologise for the thread hijack.

I'll post something in a new thread next time.

Congrats, the Baby Bottle rules. Natural but with sort of a "gripping" sound to it and good punch. I recently discovered it to be awesome as a drum mic in front of the kit as well.

Scroll down to "Blue Baby Bottle Front of Kit" and check it out. Nevermind the playing...it was strictly for "what the hell is this going to sound like" purposes. :)
