Just got a Tascam mk488II

Great unit easy to use just one question how do the inserts work (yeah the ones I've always ignored on other devices) the manual tells me i can use equalizers/compressor type devices with them but as far as I can tell the consist of only one 1/4 jack while eq's and compressors have send/return or in/out jacks somebody please give me a clue?

the inserts have 1/4" stereo on one side and two 1/4" mono on the other side. like a Y and the stereo side has one channel as send and the other as return. then that soincides with the mono channels as which should go into which part of the compressor etc...
