I think I'm gonna get sick of recording directly eventually, so I'm kind of curious how you've been able to mic in an apartment and not get evicted (with cool and not so cool neighbours in earshot).

I'm using the Mesa Boogie Recto Preamp, and I see Mesa Boogie has also got a 20-20 1-rack tube amp available...but the smallest I've seen in a 1 speaker cab (x2 for stereo) is a 12 incher. I'd like, in a dream world, to unite a small rack-amp, my Recto Preamp, and a pair of very small, but good sounding speakers, a setup that get's pushed without a ton of volume. Gonna happen, or just a theory?

Any suggestions on how to get a miked sound without getting evicted?

I.e., I'm guessing the 20-20 because it's small enough so it might sound good/pushed at a lower volume that say a 50 or 100 watt head. It's this thing: http://www.mesaboogie.com/Product_Info/Stereo_Power/20_20_Stereo/20_20_stereo.html

Really just curious. I'm hoping I can get used to the direct sound I've got starting with the Boogie. But I'm betting I'll not be happy as I get more and more into recording again.

You can build a soundproof box with just enough room inside for a 12" speaker and a SM57. Plug in your amp and wail any time of the day or night.

That sounds plausible. Might be good just to get 2 1x12 Rectifiers (I'm using a G-force, like stereo effects).

...And build a box that I can tell people is where Houdini is hiding:):):)

I guess I'm not going to find the materials I need at Home Depot though...LOL

Thanks:)

The box parts can come from the hardware store,1/2" oriented strand board, carpenters glue, drywall screws and pink fiberglass insulation.
I must admit I only record my amps the "old way". I crank it and spank it!

Thanks:)

I've noticed there are a lot of little 1/2 rack amps out there that I guess are solid state, low powered and high quality, and might serve to function as my normal 'amp' for my soundcard as well when available as for my Boogie preamp into a couple of cab speakers.

Does it make sense to get such a little thing (like the Hafler P1000 (under Products> Studio) at: http://www.hafler.com/home/ which is in my price range)...

I can use that for listening, and for recording my tube preamp with a mic/speakers since I'd be using headphones then anyways for everything else.

I don't know enough about this stuff.

Thanks Track Rat. They all seem to be full heads/combos, but I've already got a great tube preamp, and am hoping just to get a small power amp and a couple of 1x12 cabs to run into.

Or was that your point, that my thinking is daft? LOL

I am not ever expecting this to turn pro, and what I'm really hoping is that I can get a really small (like a nice clean 25 Watts/side) rack mount amp that can function as both power for my Boogie preamp when recording, and power for my monitors directly from my soundcard when writing/listening with Sonar/computer.

Does that make sense, or am I still just daft?

Shawn:)

The Harlequin is the one I'm interested in. Class A, 6 watts, two 12AX7's in the preamp section and a single EL-84 power tube into a Vintage 30. Not enough horse power to gig with but you can get it to all shades of crunch in the studio.

That actually looks like a great little amp, probably what I'll do if I can't get a li'l poweramp for my preamp.

Thanks Track Rat:)
