Alright, here's the deal. i have an electric guitar and i just recently got a 1/4 mono to 1/8 stereo so i can plug my guitar directly into my comp. problem is, i can't get any sound, i've tried cakewalk, sound recorder and music match and i hit record an play, but it doesn't record anything. also, no sound comes out of the speakers. do i need more equipment, or what am i doing wrong!? thanks for your help

Ok, i know my input volume is up that's not the problem. so I just need something to increase the sound volume as it goes in. ok. that's funny because when I bought the converter everyone at radio shack warned me that i could blow out my sound card or do damage or something, and I'm having just the opposite problem. Shows how my they know. thanks a lot

Any other suggestions from people would be appreciated. what kind of preamp to get, what i should look for, what are price ranges. thanks a lot

If you have a guitar pedal or processor that might get you started without going and buying a preamp.
I don't think any pedal will do but something like EQ or Distortion, something with level control.

Depends on you budget and what you want to do...if you just want to record guitar you might be better of getting some kind of amp modeller like V-amp or the pod.

Otherwise get yourself a mixer.

You can plug your directly into the MIC jack of your sound card, the click the little speaker at the bottom right corner of your screen, select Options, Properties, Recording, then select MIC and jack the volume up.

You'll be able to record directly from your guitar. It'll sound something resembling bird shit (even if you goop it up with effects in your recording program). You'll wish the built-in mic preamp in your soundcard sounded almost as good as a bad cell phone.

Some of us have to learn the hard way (I did long ago when I got started). Best bet is to

1) Get a good amp, a good mic (like a Shure SM-57), and a preamp or mixer then use the Line-in jack of your soundcard...

--or--

2) Buy a pod (or J-Station or another decent guitar FX processor) and plug into the Line-in jack of your soundcard.
