...over $1000 in tracks, fixtures and wall sconces!

The day before was almost $800 in electrical supplies - including 5 dimmers at $40 bucks a pop!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm in buying mode starting today. Have to finish my control room. Have fun with all that stuff:D

Getting this stuff is both pain and pleasure at the same time!

Hey Blue - What brand/model of dimmers did you get and where did you get them? I'll be installing track lights in a couple of weeks and want to put dimmers on them.

Thanks,
DD

Lutron DIVA series - 600watt, standard voltage.... HERE

Stay away from Leviton, so I'm told!

Post a link when you get it all set up - I'd like to see what $2k in lighting looks like!

I will!

(actually, John will - at the Studios Under Construction section of his site...!)

What's up with Leviton dimmers?
I don't know specifically, other than I was told by several contractors that they're noisy as hell (even the expensive ones) and prone to breakdown!

that was my question.

i thought dimmers were bad because of the noise.

where are you putting the dimmers? in your waiting area, control room or tracking room?

2 in the control room, 1 in each of the studios........

All lighting is on a completely different circuit than any of the audio....

All audio power is on several circuits all on the same phase - as well, all the gear will be fed by balanced transformers...

Very little chance of any noise in the audio circuits!

Bruce, you're buying lights and we haven't seen ONE construction photo.
:D
OK for you, I guess we know where we stand!!!

It's amazing what all this stuff costs huh?
I think I had to budget $6,000 for doors! Fricking Doors!
Nice ones, but still.....

I forget what my lighting budget is.
A buck $2.98 I think???

Any way, glad to hear things are moving along.
Would be nice to see some dirt and grit instead of glitz and glamour though. :D

I saw those same dimmers at http://www.elights.com/lutdivdim1.html for $29.95. Somewhere else (can't remember where) for $22.95). Of course there's shipping. Those come with a small light inside the switch. I guarantee it's a neon bulb. I read somewhere those little bulbs in switches can cause some noise in the line. I'm sure you could probably open the switch and remove the bulb (seal off wire too). I'd like to know how they work out.

heh-heh... $29 US = $44 Cdn!!!

Nice to know they're cheaper here!!!

Bruce,

Isn't that a Behringer 2200 Compressor in your rack?

lmao

just kidding, just kidding, I know it isn't. that was mine.

I really liked the pics on John's site, Please post some pics with the new lights. Do you do video editing as well or just soundtrack stuff?

larry

larry - those pics are of Bruce's old studio. I'll get the new one up tomorrow. I have to go and start up the generator tomorrow to recharge my batteries. We've had constant rain now for the past few days. In fact I now might be flooded in as the creeks are raging. At one point we had over 2" in 1/2 hr today and it's been pouring down all day and night.

Our national anthem is correct when it says, "of drought and flooding rains" as we were in drought a couple of weeks ago ;)

cheers

Hey John - Kinda off subject here but did you ever post pictures of your solar setup. Periodically I have an interest in solar power. I read up on it for awhile, see the prices and go read something else :D

did you ever post pictures of your solar setup

No I've never taken pics of it.
It's pretty simple really. I have around 600w of panels on the roof feeding into a regulator that feeds two battery systems with a total of 400amp/hrs which means I can draw 400amps for 1 hour or 1 amp for 400hrs. watts=volts x amps. I'm on 24 volts so 1 amp is 24 watts. My puter is my biggest power use and it draws around 6 - 8 amps, most is taken by the 17" monitor. I gotta get a LCD.

The input is based on a 6 hour sun cycle from 9am - 3pm, so I can put in around 90 - 100 amps per day.

I use the low watt fluorencent bulbs, like a 20watt bulb puts out the equivalent of 100watts light so I run around 4 lights at night.

I also have a small 350w washing machine and a LPG fridge/freezer and stove.

My hot water is also solar but I have a wetback on my fireplace so I can heat water with it if necessary.

I also have a 3000w Honda generator that I can charge up the batteries with if necessary. So far I've only needed to use it twice this year as we've had clear sunny days everyday, cos of the drought :)

To replace the setup would cost around $6,000 which includes the 50% rebate on panels that the Gov offers.

When you live with a system like this you realise how incredibly cheap electricity really is. :) You don't think twice about turning on a 2400w heater do you??

But hey - if you stood on my verandah and looked out at the view and the setting you'd understand why I do it :D

cheers

Hey John

are those Trace inverters? I used to be the lead tech there. Cool you are solar powered.

Kirk

are those Trace inverters

mine's a Latronics. 800w I think it's an aussie company.

I used to be the lead tech there wow kirk, that must have been an interesting job mate.

If anyone wants a good site for solar check this out

http://www.absak.com/

I saw some really good solar systems in the aborigine outback communities. Full panel setups with diesel backup etc. running the whole community. Way to go out there. :)

cheers
