Just bought an A-Designs MP-2 Mic pre!!!

After reading lots and lots about "high-end" mic pres, I finally jumped on the boat and bought an A-Designs MP-2.

My main applications for this pre will be vocals, with bass DI coming in a close second. I'm definitely excited and will post my impressions relative to my other gear:

convertors: e-mu 1820m
mic pres: 1820m, rane ms-1b, mackie 1202
compressor: rnc

going into cubase 2 sx

i'll post some clips of acoustic guitar, DI bass, and vocals soon.
 
Cool. It's so exciting waiting for new gear to arrive. I am in the same boat. I just ordered the EMU 1820M card today and it will be here probably Wed of next week. I also ordered the Roland GI20 mdidi converter and the GK3 midi pickup for my recording guitar. Now I will have a chance to record midi into Sonar with my giitar, finally. It was tough because instead of that I could have gotten the Tampa and Lexicon MX200 instead of the Roland stuff. I can pick them up next though. I see you have the 1820M, how do you like it and are you having any trouble with it?

Hey, congrats!

I have both the MP-2 and the emu. I think you'll love them both.

What mics are you going to use with the MP2?

I love the 1820m. It sounds amazing...significantly better than my previos m-audio delta 410. the preamps aren't bad, either. I had a few driver issues early on, but have been stable for well over a year now.

I've been eyeballing the Soundelux U195. Looks like a lot of mic for the money. I will be recording both rap/hip hop and punk/emo type music.

mrbowes, how do you like the SM7 as compared to the SM57? What does the difference sound liek to you? I ask because I'm thinking maybe about getting one or the other of those. I'm currently leaning toward the SM57 just because it is a little cheaper and also smaller.
 
hey i'll do some A/Bs and edit, but off the top, i recall the sm7 as being much smoother than the sm57, with airier top end.
 
The A Designs stuff kicks ass. I think you are going to love it.

Hey man...

I have both and the SM7 is just a much higher quality mic... the best way to describe it is wider and bigger sounding than the 57. It also seems like it has less noise to me or something. The smoother comment describes it well. My 57 basically just sits now.

Thanks for the comments about the SM7 versus SM57! I think I'll hold out for the SM7 now, sounds like it is worth it. mrbowes, be sure to let us know what you think of the A-Designs once you've had a chance to work with it.

You know, you just don't hear that much about them. I love my MP-2, and people who have recorded at my place think it rocks.

It is definately worth it and shouldn't be compared to the SM57 which is a totally different, although useful, mic.

The SM7 is one of the absolutely best dynamics there is and it sounds great on just about everything. You will need a preamp with a hefty amount of clean gain though as it is very quiet.

you will be pleasantly shocked when you compare the mp2's DI to the others. :D
 
You know, I haven't tried it yet (hangs his head in shame....) :o

well what are you waiting for?

On a side note the passive ATTY is a must have with the MP2 so you can drive those lovely tubes!
 
Got it used for 1300 the "R" version
