I am a singer/songwriter tired of pay all of my money to recording studios and not getting a finished product I want. I want a software package that can lay down my background track on and then record my vocal tracks with also...then mix them down...all through my PC. Is there such a program? If so please let me know....

Can you name a few so I will have a starting point....Thanks

If you are recording in pro studios and not getting the sound you want, you are in the wrong studio.....give more specifics on what you are after...if your voice sounds like Elmer Fudd and you want it to sound like Pavoratti, they are just engineers, not magicians....

Now, if you are looking at doing "pro quality" on computer at home, you are looking at more than software....audio optimized PC, a killer sound card, great mics, some acoustical treatment of the room(s) youll be working in, good studio monitors, good cable, some well set-up instruments.....probably more, but Im giving you a good idea....youd be cheaper just hiring a good producer/engineer in a pro studio

Hi...
the problem is I just don't have the money to spend in the studio to get the polish I like...so if I had the studio at home I could spend all the time I wanted on the music until it was the way I wanted it. I have found no one loves your music as much as you do...so the best person to care of it is you...I hope this makes sense and that is why I want to have a home recording studio through my PC so I can work on my music when I want and put the blood sweat and tears in it that a hired person will not do....

netalt,

You are perhaps forgetting the amount of skill it takes to get a good recording. No matter how much effort you put in, there will be a learning curve. You will have to become a reasonably good recording engineer to get results at home that are better than you could get at any studio worth its salt.

Then again, I suck at home recording, but it hasn't stopped me! So go for it. Just don't expect the quality to come overnight or without a great deal of effort and frustration along the way.

Back to the answer please

Thanks for all the great input...
But I just need to know if there are programs that will let me create backgroundtracks and record my vocals and other intsruments and mix them on the computer..does such a creature exist?? If so what is its name? Thanks from the newbie...lol

Er, yes...

The programs are called Recording Engineers. They do things like create backing tracks, recording vocals, mixing and sometimes even mastering. It takes a long time to learn how to use your recording engineer, and the programs are so complex, there isn't a computer system in the world powerful enough to run them. So they come pre-installed in units called "gear sluts."

PS.... do you REALLY think there could be a software program that can "mix" for you??????????????

But I just need to know if there are programs...

...Proof positive that you're about to make a brash decision. If you had spent 10 seconds searching this site, you'd have answers to all of your questions.

Hey now don't be mean

Now,
I have read some of the site...I have not read all of the post b/c there are so many out there....And to the no I don not expect the program to mix down for me I expect to use the program to do that...everyone knows a machine is only as good as its user and I could be more insulting but I want be...unlike the previos to posters were...now is there a software program out there??

KingNothing and Tekker both named some common packages! What else do you want???

(and no one's being rude, just somewhat facetious.... the points people have made were well taken - you simply seem to beleive the recording process isn't as complex as it is, and people are giving you a reality check!)

I understand that recording is a time consuming and creative process...Like anything worth doing it is not going to be easy and I realize that but at least I will be in control of the process...No I have seen the other' reply and am currently doing research on those products but I want to know and learn as much as possible and to compare as many product as possible so if you know of any others please let me know....

People here are very happy to help...

...but you have to help yourself too. Read up on and research your options a bit, then post some more specific questions!

The answer to "what do I need to get professional results?" question is long and extremely varied........

You may want to visit the 'mp3 mixing clinic' at this site. Most of the time folks forget to mention what equipment they used (which drives me nuts), but you'll be able to get a general idea of what some experienced and inexperienced people are accomplishing. Compare a lot of recordings to your studio results and see if having total control would be worth the huge amounts of time and money you'll have to invest for similar resuts.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for doing it yourself and am blown away by a lot of recordings here, but for what you want to do, you'd better really be excited about the whole recording process-not just the results.

The best multitracking software when considering bang for the buck is N-Track.... www.fasoft.com

King gave that to you in the first response to your post....download it , fire it up, record something, post it in the MP3 Mixing Clinic......

Of course you will still need at least a half decent mic, a half decent preamp, and you can get half decent results....

Go into the MP3 Mixing Clinic and listen to Mr.Lip's latest and look at the gear he listed and it will give you a good idea of what you will need....

do you currently have a pc and 128 megs?

Download protoolsFREE from http://www.digidesign.com

It will do everythin you want but is limited to 8 tracks of audio and 48 of midi. If you like the results you get, then you can get more expensive software.

Hi thanks for all the great info...I am checking into Ntrack...if anyone out there is using it please give me feedback...pro's and con's what you love and hate about the product...and if you have any sample recordings I would love to hear them. Also let me know if you think it is user friendly or a definite need for a dummies book...lol

NO POSTINGS

Hi all I am still searching. I have a soundblaster live soundcard. I am looking at N-Track.....Does anyone know anything about this program....I am not a technical person as in knowing all the "jargon" but I can get around a computer like nobody's business. So when you write back please speak as low-tech as possible....Still looking for a program to enable me to lay down tracks, record vocals, and then do a mix down....that is affordable...I am looking at the ones people have listed above but still am trying to wade through all the hype....Thanks all

:)

Just download N-Track and try out the demo! I believe there's a help-file that guides you step by step the recording process. If you have specific ?s re. N-Track there's a forum here for the program.
I've been using N-Track since about October of last year and I love it and am amazed that it is so cheap!
Good luck!
