Hey guys I have sonar XL 2.0. I was just testing it out and tried to put effects on a song I had already recorded. Now the problem was when I chose an effect and tried to preview how it would sound before applying it (by hitting audtion from the particular effcts panel) the program only played the first 3-5 second of the part I was trying to put the effect to . The effect was put on to my sound clip but I could only preview the first few seconds. Is this how this program is or is there some option I need to change to preview the whole song/part of song would sound with the effect?

Also I have only 128MB Ram And 733 MhZ processor but the program ran very smoothly. Will I have a lot of slowdowns if I start to actually record vocals? And will it just be slowdows or will it effect the quality of the recording?

Thanks a bunch in advance :)

I think it is the way for everyone, but you could send it to a aux track and apply effects in it, so you can control the effect on the fly.

I'd bump your RAM to 512mb if you plan on running more than a couple tracks of FX at once.

Goo idea! Or just use it as a Real Time effect, tweak it and then Bounce to Track/Clip. :)

hey thanks lynn! 25 seconds is waay better then 3!
Yeah, but it's still a destructive application of the FX once you apply it. Why not patch it as a realtime effect. No limit on preview at all, and reversable if you need to. :)

(However, you may need to bump up your RAM first.)

auditioning f/x

This command also works on midi f/x which are not destructive. And, as long as you have unlimited undo functions, it's not always a bad idea to apply f/x to audio. If you know what you are going for it can keep cpu usage down to a dull roar if you know what I mean. Anyway, good recording!

Certainly CPU usage can be an issue. However, the "unlimited" Undo is only good up until the point where you save the project. Doesn't help if the next day you decide that 25:1 compression was just a tad much, regardless of how good it sounded after those 6 beers last night. :)

My suggestion is work with realtime effects, until your CPU starts complaining. After that, clone the original track and archive it, and then use destructive FX on the clone.

Always leave a return path for yourself.
