I'm currently looking at these two mics for a small dia. cond. pair. Can anyone compare them for me. I'm to far from a pro audio dealer to go listen to them and plan to order from a dealer with a return policy.

Any other similiar mics I need to look at within the same general price range????

If both the Josepson's and the Neumann's were the same price, then it would be a tough call on which to choose. However, the Neumann's are quite a bit more expensive now since they raised their prices (unless your buying some older stock from ebay). I own a pair of KM184's, but if I had to go out today a spend my cash on a pair of SD mics, I would either get the Josephson C42's or else I would get a pair of Groove Tube GT 44's. I really like my KM184's, but the price they sell for now isn't justifiable unless you need to wow studio clients with name brand recognition.

I think you should consider T.H.E. mics, manufactured by Taylor Johnson of the Sound Room. They were reviewed in October 2001 Recording magazine, and the reviewer seemed to think the KR-2W capsule on the KA-04 body was a very nice mic ($638). The bonus is you can also buy other heads including a two Lollipop heads for around $500 each that will compete with the $2000 big boys.

KR-2W Sub-Cardioid (wide cardioid) 1/2 inch capsule ........ $ 299

I think you would be hard pressed to beat the Josephsons in ANY circumstance, especially with an Oktava or something like that. Depends on how clean you wanna be.
Both will be perfect, choose one.
For overheads, it doesnt hurt to have some handsome grain in it, some color, like the Gefell M300 or a U87.
Go with the Josephsons I say.

I sencond the T.H.E. suggestion

I would definitely give the T.H.E. line a look. One reason is that anytime you are spending that kind of money, you owe it to yourself to look at (i.e. listen to) everything you can. Another is I recently heard some acoustic tracks cut with nothing but THE mics. Even on CD it almost sounded like I was there. Part of it I'm sure was because they used that Binaural Sphere as a room mic on most of the tracks (and that thing sounded phenominal on its own) but there was some close micing with the small diaphragm stuff as well as the Lollipop heads and it all was great.

I'm not saying they're better than Neumann or Josephson. I have yet to even hear a track done with the Josephsons. I'm just saying you might want to add it to your list or contenders.

BTW - If you call Taylor Johnson he could probably be talked into a little better deal than what's on the Sound Room website.

Give it a shot.

I've been checking out the T.H.E. stuff lately, and frankly I'm pretty damn impressed. FWIW, I found the Joesphson C-42 a bit more open than the T.H.E. "cardioid" ... but it was kind of an 'initial check out'... they're going on to a much more rigorous examination over the next couple of weeks.

They both seem to be very cool sounding mics... but not necessarily interchangable by quite a margin. As always... YMMV.
