I have a Michael Joly modded MK 319 that I am very pleased with. I have noticed that when using it anywhere on a drum kit it seems to pick up a lot of (nice) kick drum. Any cautions or reasons to be concerned about using this mic directly in front of the kick? SPL, blowing out the capsule, etc.?

yup be really careful and make sure you dont put it anywhere there is moving air. if you are worried use a pop filter or windscreen.

i think 4 to 10 inches infront of the bass drum a little off to the side to avoid blasts is a good spot. u47s, soundelux u195s, and at4047s are used like this.

i've read that using a pop filter is a good idea whenever you use a condenser mic on a kick. this would probably be especially important due to the headbasket modifications that michael joly does.

I use condensors on the front resonant head all the time. Two inches from the head. Just don't put it anywhere near the the hole (if it has one) as the air is really blasting out there. That could be a problem. I've never tried my 319 (I did my own mods ala Jolly on it :D) though. I've been putting an AM-52 there in fig 8.

Here's an update. I e-mailed Michael and he said it would be no problem. Worst thing that could happen is if I overload it and it distorts, but it shouldn't damage the mic.
