Hi, I'm new here, in this forum. I'm from Brazil, and I recorded a song, did all by myself (all the instruments and voices, recording, creation, mixing, eq, etc). The song name is "Bruna", it's a Pop Rock/Hard song. I'm mixing it all day long, and my ears are very tired, needing insights and second opinions. In this link, there are two versions, two different mixings. So, if anyone can help me with opinions about my two mixings, and what you think about the song itself, the idea, etc, i'll appreciate it. The drums are Sampler (Ez Drummer), the keyboards are Midi VST (Korg L1), and the rest, poor equipment, poor instruments, there I have in my "wannabe" home-studio, and a lot of virtual eq and mixing. Thanks!

I'm hearing a little Jon Bovi / Scorpions going on -

I'm getting pulled away and only had time to listen to the 'remix' - here's some thoughts:

1) the vocals (all of them) seem just a little to the left for me - could be my set up - great job singing and also mixing the bg vox

2) I thought there was some telephone-style eq on the lead vox in the beginning (maybe there was)? And I kept waiting for it to come off, but it never did. Toward the end, I realized maybe the whole song is missing a chunk in the lower mids / high lows. The low lows (e.g., the kick drum) sounded good.

Nice job!

Great piece - Your vocals are top notch - remind me of Jon Bon Jovi. The drums are good - EZ Drummer is a good program. The underlying keyboards and guitars sit nicely in the mix. Smokin' lead break !!! You're very good at everything!

Both the original and remix have equal qualities but I prefer the
"Bruna" version....

Very cool!!

In my opinion the remix is a big improvement on the first...

Im no expert but in my view here's what I picked up

-drums need better EQ'ing..especially the kick..at the moment they sound like EZ drummer to me
-the instruments/vocals are panned out too much to the sides leaving little meat in the middle
-the vocals need slightly toned down as they enter the song..

The guys here will give you pointers (they are very good) but you have a lot of talent..the songs well composed, your singings excellent, and your volume levels are there..great job

Id suggest going through a few of the posts here...you'll here what some other rock mixes sound like and how to mix the less well mixed ones better..this forum is the best learning area of the site :)

Thanks! Vocals a little to the left? I don't think so, i really did all the panning, and I never saw this, but I'll take a look into it, maybe you're right. The most difference between the first and the second mixing, are the drums, and the bass. Yeah, I made a kind of "telephone style" in a little part of the beggining. I'll take a look about lows too, after I rest a little. Thanks for the feedback! Oh, but I didn't understand what you meant with the effect never "came off" (I'm from brazil, I don't know all the phrasal verbs...)

Thanks! So, you prefer the first version? I'll keep that in mind!

That's not cultural, that's me not being clear - I could totally tell when the telephone effect was there, but then when it stopped, I thought it was still on, but less so, and then I thought it was going to be turned all the way off, but that never happened.

Ok! So, you think that drums need more EQ, when they it start to sound "electronic"... about the panning, yeah, I really tried to use all the stereo imaging, of the speakers, and I forgot to put more thins in middle, you're right, but I also did this, because the bass and vocals could stand out in the mixing. The vocals in the beggining (I'm from Brazil, don't understand everything), when u say "tone down", u mean, volume, lows and highs, or tune? Thanks!

I turned the effect off, but, I'm using a Shure Lyric Mic, the worst of shures mics... I think, so, I have some difficulties in mixing the vocals. The other instruments, I have a little better equipment, Fender, Line 6, but I record them in line... what is missing for me, is mics, for vocals and instruments (like Shure SM-57 and Shure Sm-58), and a good Bass.

It may be my monitors Johnny but I couldn't really pick up on the kick drums bass or any treble on the snare...nothing really wrong with them I just know they're EZ drummer/sampled without you having to say...and even more obvious when alongside your talent on real instruments

I get what you're saying about the stereo imaging..I either have everything crammed in the middle or sounding like some fake sixties stereo album lol

the vocals just jumped out at me...the first phrase just seemed higher in volume than the rest..

again great job :)

This Mic gets a lot of "bad ambience", I used the same effect in all parts (except the telephone one), but the sound changes a lot, during the whole vocal track (maybe because of the mic, maybe because i changed the distance between me and the mic during the recording, i don't know)

you're going to have a fight with a bad mic..its great you managed what you did with it

Oh, ok, thanks for the feebacks, about the beginning, of the vocals, that's the first thing i'm gonna take a look at tomorrow, i saw this before, i thought the beginning was with less volume, than I turned up the volume, i guess i didn't stop when i was supposed to...

Yeah... Definite Bon Jovi vibe. I like it.

I'd have to agree that the recording of the vocals on this song are its weak point. The vocal performance was pretty well-done, it's just the recording that kind of sticks out.

Love the musicianship. Even the drum programming is good. Great guitars. When the guitar solo kicks in, the sound is well above average for home-recorders.

Great job. Keep it up!

My vote goes for the remix. Sounds like the bottom-end is brought up quite a bit, and it adds beefiness to the mix - along with a bit more drive. Good stuff.

Thanks for the comments! Yeah, in the remix, I put the bass with more treble, and little less lows, put more punch in drums, and the low that was missing, in put in the master, so, the sound became heavier and more defined, but I'm still working on it. I'm think i'm doing what I can with this mic, but it has a death appointment. Soon, i'll br buying the Sm-58, for start.
Thanks!
