Magic Bag Of Sounds
anybody a fan of his work? he really inspired me to want to do want to track bands live... just ask bands to come visit me, record a live recording, and then send them on their way. if they suck it'll be obvious, if they're awesome it will shine through beautifully.
i just don't really like how his recordings sound. they're usually retardedly compressed.
tell me more about him!

The Peel Sessions were recorded at the BBC expressly for broadcast, hence the compression, I think. I have a few of the Peel Sessions records that came out. Peel was a great way for unknown yet deserving bands to get some airplay and attention, and was definitley responsible for getting some great acts on their way. He died last year. I think I even started a thread about him.

I don't know if I'm a fan of his work but the session tapes are pretty cool. I have three on cassette if memory serves me correctly: Joy Division, Gang of Four, and Echo and the Bunneymen. The Echo and the Bunneymen tape is the most interesting because it features the band in their original format without a drummer. They use a drum machine affectionately called "Echo" if I remember my history/folklore correctly.

There's a lot out there on John Peel, especially in light of his recent demise:

yea i was really bummed when he died. like i said, i really love the idea of bringing in a touring band and just letting them shine with only one or two overdubs. thats just what i hear, i'd like to see what kind of gear they used and techniques and stuff.

John Peel has worked in Radio for a very long time, right back to the days when the BBC was much more conservative about what was played and it is questionable whether a lot of very big and influential bands would have suceeded without his help, including people like Pink Floyd.

I'm a HUGE John Peel fan. I've heard session versions that were better than the originals.

BBC 6 Music still plays a lot of the Peel sessions everyday.
