OK, my current mic collection is very lame for recording. I have 2 Sure SM-57's, 1 SM-58, 2 Sennheiser 805's, and a funny little AT dynamic mic that sucks.
I am buying a new mic for vocal reording next week. I have a wonderful female singer singing for me, and my mics are just no good for her voice. Of course, I don't have a lot of money, and I have done some searches of the BBS to see what everyone liked. I think my budget has to be under $300 right now. I found this JOEMEEK JM47 mic on zzsounds that looked kind of interesting but really couldnt find any info here doing a search. Anyone have this thing? I guess I'll end up with the Event NT1 if nothing else.
Oh, would it be worth the extra bucks to go to the NT2? I might be able to squeeze it out if its really a big difference.
Thanks!

yo ,hard2hear,i am in the same situation, except i have only the funny at dynamic, same wonderful femal;e vocalist and same desire for the purchase,i too saw the joe meek, anybody i have asked says that they are a great company.but still ,i would like to hear it for myself, you live near a guitar center?plus,in that price range,i saw nady and marshall ,and cad, most need phantom power, but nonetheless,i wonder why trhe joemeek is that cheap, have you heard their tube pre's?or anything?they sound great?have you seen the others i mentioned?because if that thread a few weeks ago(rode nt or c3000?) it made me hesitate with the nt1,there were more bad than good.but tell me how your progress is.i don't like the music stores in philly as far as customer service and versatility, you can't find a great selection so you have to order here in order to try it out.please let me know what you choose-

mojo-
I'm in Cincinnati and we have Guitar Canter and Mars, as well as Midwest Music, which is local, but big and carrys a lot of stuff. About all we don't have is a decent sports team ;) anyways..
I'm going to go tonight to GC and Mars, although I alerady know all Mars has in my price range is a couple of AT's. I dunno if GC carries the Meek or not, I've never looked at their recording dept before. I'll let you know late tonight what I decide. If I find something that hits me I might even pick it up tonite.

Guys

Please don't do anything rash yet. Don't buy anything until I get a chance to say something. I don't have time right now but I'll be back later tonight or late afternoon tomorrow.

What you decide to do after that is, of course, up to you but please let me inform you about some of the mics you mentioned and didn't mention, first.

So last night I went to Mars and GC...they both have squat. Strange that all of the sudden, the Rhode NT1 is hard to find. Its not at zzounds or GC. But alas...I will wait for the wise words of RE.
Oh here's another question: When shopping at the store for mics, how the heck do you test them? I mean, I can listen to each one all day but I don't think I'll really know how it sounds until its on a track.'
Thanks!
Hey, I just noticed that in the MusiciansFriend catalogue they have a Nady SCM900 large diaphram mic for $99!! Maybe I could buy about 4 of them and make my place LOOK like a studio.
heh heh...PS-that was a joke

but that's what i am saying,i saw those nady's and i wonder how they are?i mean, yeah you get what you pay for,but maybe they are the same quality as the rode nt's?i don't know.but you know at guitar center ,they are supposed to let you try out those mic's on a rtrack and play it back,in the guitar centers i have seen,in the pro audio, there was always a nice studio set up with good monitors, any store ,or one that deals with pro audio knows that the only realistic way to try a mic is by tracking.even the small shops, should at least pull out a dat deck and let you tery different mic's on the same deck to hear the difference in sounds.anyway ,yes ,let us wait for someone who obviously knows more than us.........recording engineer......where are you?....................?

yeah, the GC in Cincinnati is a JOKE! I really dont give them very long because their selection and setup really sucks. I think as soon as we get the new Sam Ash, CG is goinna go. They only had like 6 different mics, and those were all in a little case jumbled around.
This is really throwing a curve in my impulse buying!:)

i hear ya,i feel yer pain!!!!!!"throwing a curve"to say the least!!!at one point i was going to music stores every weekend, and i could not walk out of there unless i had spent at least $100.!!or rather would not walk in unless i bought something.now i just can't afford it! i would one paycheck on rent ,the other on music"ya know ,it would be really nice to eat and have toilet paper,BUT,$200 is a really good deal for that fender telecaster, and i only have one right now"for some reason,in the first time in my life i have a regular 9-5 dayjob, yet i still live on the same budget i had when iwas playing guitar in clubs for a living,go figure.oh yeah,hard2hear,a friend says go to a substantial store that has the selsction you're interested in(where?i dunno)and try everything out that you want, but never buy from that place, when you are ready to purchase,go to a different store, one that has what you want and bring cash and be ready to maybe try it out to be sure it works, but show thenm hard cash.he told me the percentage of markup and all that from list,i think they pay half of list price, then mark it up,they show us the list and sell it to us still at an outrageous price!!so he is saying think about how much they pay how much they expect and figure in your price somewhere in between.i guess it might work in a more personalized store, not like guitar center, although, about 15 years ago ,the salesmen ther would always cut deals on the side.it feels like they are getting to be less of musicians and more of cretin salespeople.someone has a thread about marshall electronics, like 2 threads below, although there is nothing said yet,but i'd be interested in what anyone says about them,i noticed their large diaphragms are a good price,oh i am so confused!!!

yo thanx ,but.uhhhh.... i still am more confused ,just a bit,did you re-read those threads?they say soooooooo much!!!yer right though, what is $100?anyway,a lot to the regular guy,but in recording budget, what is it? at leat it could be an addition to your mic collection.right?i like what i hear about the a.t. 3525,though,what about you?ever try one, with my limited funds,i gotta start somewhere ,and through my mixed up theory,at this point anything is gonna sound better than my terrible dynamic audio technica, right?damn, now that i think about it,when i recorded my sister, she had an sm58 and i grabbed for my mic, what was i thinking?oh well too late, time to buy a better mic,goi back to denver on some vacation and record her new songs better

I think I'll probably go with the AT 4033. It seems like people think tht one's heads above the others. I still might get a Nady $99 special. I would like to see what the difference is for myself. A $100 learning experience, you might call it.
Thanks for the help!

OK LET'S DISCUSS,ALTHOUGH THIS MORNING SUCKS,BIGTIME,SO FAR,NOW COUNTING THE 5TH TIME I HAVE RE-STARTED THIS SENTENCE,I KEEP PUSHING SOME UNSEEN BUTTON AND ERASING ALL THE STUFF I HAD CREFULLY PUT INTO TYPEWRITTEN WORDS ON THIS NON IDIOT PROOFED COMPUTER!!!!!!!!!!!!1but it's not like i have been re-writing the same sentence, usually i will get to the end of a huge paragraph before it erases all my thoughts and questions!!i have said all this crucial info and asked these pending questions that now when i think about trying to rewrite them the 6th time i get flustered and give up!!!ok i vented, hey i shouldn't even be doing this,i am at work,in a municipal bond firm,"home recording, what's that?"ok recording engineer,at the local pawnshop there is a rode nt2 for $299 .do i bring hard cash, talk them down to $225?is there some unforseen problem that i don't know about buying used mics?what should i look for that i won't see on the surface? from all that i have been reading, the bottom line looks as $300+ will get me a little closer to some mic that will last and have some versatility, like that AT40 series.i need it for mainly female vocals, drums and acoustic guitar.big room for drums, lotsa wood.i am willing to buy the rode nt2 ,providing i talk'em down, and then a few months later when i buy my computer,i will also buy pre-amps and another large diaphragm.oh ,this week i wanna track an acoustic grand piano.to my access this week i can borrow a shure condenser, afew dynamics(sm 57s and 58s)i need it in mono,to utilize all 8 tracks.any suggestions?

I've Been A Bit Busy...

I don't know if I'm too late, but...

Yeah, I think you should talk 'em down for the NT-2.

What's the return policy for the pawn shop? It's worth a try to talk 'em down? If it's not very good, I think new would be a better way to go.

If I were to buy new and my 2 choices were the NT-2 and 4033, I'm not sure which I'd go with. The NT-2 doesn't seem to have as good a QC as the 4033; although the NT-2 QC is still pretty good. I've heard NT-2s that are just as nice as the 4033 and I've heard NT-2 that aren't; although some of that has to do with the sound source.

Saying that, if I couldn't listen and compare, first, I'd probably go with the 4033.

About the piano recording, I know you already did it but I suggest the Shure condenser at least as far away as the length of the piano. How possible is that?
