Well, the microphone section was as close as I could come for a vocal question. :D

How do you get the same vocal effect like Joe Walsh used in "Life's Been Good"? It's kinda like he's singing in a tin can.

As I remember, Joe used one of Bob Heil's Talk Boxes.

A big part of the "Joe Walsh Sound" is the Cooper Time Cube. It's a primitive delay device that uses 2 lengths of garden hose-like tubing. When I worked at Quad Studios in Nashville, there was one there that was supposedly left behind by Joe Walsh.

Here's a little info I dug up:

Joe Walsh also made use of the Talk Box that Harvey mentioned. It's been a while since I've heard "Life's Been Good", but I don't remember the Talk Box being on there.

Of course a big part of Joe Walsh's sound is his very unique voice. Think back to songs like "Woman", way back in the James Gang days. That vocal doesn't sound much different than "Lifes been Good". Same thing with "Pretty maids all in a row" on Hotel California. He's just got some different sounding pipes than your average Joe.

not a bad idea...in fact, the place where some of the james gang records were done, Summa or Cleveland Recording back in the day, have a few tubes and horns to sing into and kick audio back thru to mic up.

this was along way from his solo stuff, but if ya ain't got the beans for the talkbox... grab a can of beans, open both sides, eat said beans and sing into it. any tube would work. did something thru a long piece of pipe once.
