I just received my Rode Ntk and Joe meek VC1 in the mail today. I eagerly unpacked them and plugged them in a recorded a sample vocal track. I really liked the sound of the mic, but i was a little surprised at the amount of noise coming from the preamp. I also have a mindprint envoice and a delta omni studio (breakout box with 2 pres). I tried all the units and to my surprise the delta pres had the least amount of noise.

The track recorded with the joe meek had almost too much noise for the vocal track. Is this normal? Everyone's talked that unit up and i figured noise would be the least of my problems with it?

Thanks,
Brandon

Brandon--sure wish I had an answer for you. Instead, I just concur w/ your situation. I recently got a q3. I couldn't agree more. It's a really great tool, I've found, recording bass direct and even some acoustic guitar. But the vox I 've used it on render the same; a whole lotta hiss...regardless of gain and output settings. I'm a little disappointed and/or curious, because I really enjoy the color it adds, and I know so many people swear by the joemeek pre's, but it does seem rather noisy. (& yes, to those who knew the mistake I made recently regarding using the wrong adapter, I do have a NEW unit w/ the correct power supply). Still very noisy.

I played around w/ the joemeek again today. It sounds better to me now. Strange, but I think it just takes tweaking and, more than anything else, some getting used to. For so long I've used my dbx 386 (ultra quiet), my ears just aren't used to such a "flavored" pre. It also seems more suited to an "up close/personal" kind of vocal track as opposed to really loud singing.

are you interested in selling your dbx 386?

Frist,

Amongst other things, I own both a VC-1 and an Envoice and can't say that I've experienced excessive noise from either unit unless I've turned the gain up fairly high. If you feel that there is a problem with the VC-1, I'd suggest you contact PMI, as while they didn't manufacture these units, they may be able to offer some assistance.

Geezus...............I think that's the first time I've been caught out like that :o
