Has anyone heard the Joe Meek ThreeQ? Can you compare it to the preamps on a Mackie 1202VLZ? I'm curious if the sound quality would be better/good enough to warrant the purchase.

I have a 1202VLZ and Joe Meek MC2 compressor now going to ADAT (mics are mainly AKG414ULS & Baby Bottle). Wondering if the ThreeQ would sound better (as in warmer, more articulate or less noise).

Although I don't know to what extent other factors such as power supplies affect the sound, you should know that the preamp in the threeQ is the same Burr Brown that's in the expensive new Meeks, the Toft thingy and the Drawmer Mercenary Edition strip that are all much pricier than the threeQ.

Paul White's review in Sound on Sound said that the preamp is basically pretty neutral and the compressor and EQ are where you get the coloured sound. So £115 for a decent preamp with basic comp and EQ thrown in seems a fair buy to me.

There's other options ... M-Audio Tampa, Focusrite Trakmaster etc, they are more expensive as they're full-rack so they have more in the way of controls and metering. Not many fans of the Trakmaster on here though.

Where did you get the ThreeQ for $149? I've only seen it listed for $199 so far.

help with joe meek threeQ

I am very much a beginner and I am trying to get help on setting my threeQ in regards to how to set the preamp gain to output gain to my digi002 rack gain. I use it mainly for vocals/acoustic guitar with an AT4033 and get decent sounds but I do not know how to actually set it for best results. I realize there is the peak light for the preamp gain and the the tree of lights for output gain, and then the meter in Pro Tools, but how do I set each in correlation with each other for best results? Do I start with threeQ first with preamp knob and then the output gain with digi002 rack gain all the way down, or the other way around of setting the digi rack first and then the threeQ? Sorry I don't know basic but that is why I am here

Thanks!

Just keep the input of the 002 and the output of the ThreeQ at unity gain, then adjust the preamp gain on the ThreeQ to get your level.

Noisedude is correct about the color coming from the compressor.

To answer your questions nuemes, the threeQ is a different sounding mic pre than the Mackie. I think you would like it a good deal more than the Mackie, but that does not make the Mackie bad, I think it just makes the threeQ superior.

If you look at it this way, there are 4 mic pres on the Mackie. A good mic pre is about $100.00. The Mackie is $299.00 for the entire Mixer. The threeQ is a single channel mixer if you will for $199.99. You must understand that more quality goes into the threeQ for a reason.

More flavors are always worth the money if you can afford to spend it. The threeQ has received stellar reviews so far and the front end of the threeQ is getting very high praise from many users.

Quality? Superior? You think?

Why... please be very specific (details)?

Geez - DJL, I have no idea who you are, and I have no expoertise in the recording area, but seriously...do you exist for any other purpose than getting worked up about Alan Hyatt's posts? Come on man...stop letting Alan control your life so much.

NOTE: My question above is for Alan Hyatt of PMI-AG Marketing... and no one else.

And no, you don't get to decide who answers your questions. Sorry. :)

I have the joemeek 3q. I love it. It sounds great, and I picked it up new for $149.
I just purchased one for $150 free shipping on e-bay. There is a guy who does the best offer. If you put $149 or more you'll automatically get your best offer.

I'm waiting to get it and test it compared to my Yamaha MG 10/2, but based on what've heard on other joemeek stuff (sound quality wise), I look forward to the 3Q.

p.s. - FYI Brand new, not even out of the box.

I think that's a great price because JoeMeek stuff is priced fairly similarly here to the US and the cheapest you can get here is £115, which is $200. So to get one for $150, which is about £85 of the queen's green, must be a steal.

Hey Dracon, how you doing anyway? You got any stuff finished that you're selling yet? Hope it's working for you ... when you're a multi-millionaire guy-who-does-meditiative-voiceover-things, remember the people who helped you on your first steps to the top, eh? :D

On the one below (note best offer) even though it says buy now for $199 offer $149 or $150 and you'll get it.

Thanks Dracon - that's just what I'm looking for as the local stores here don't carry it. Once you receive your ThreeQ please post with your opinion too!
