Has anyone out there tested the Joe Meek JM47 microphone....
also anyone reading this from the U.K.....do you know any shops there that HAVE THEM IN STOCK...a friend of mine will be in the UK next week and will pick me up a couple, but the emails I have sent to all the stores advertised in SOUND ON SOUND....NEVER bother to reply to my emails....oh well.......

(I got a coles ribbon mic sent to me to trial the other day...the same day a violin player happened to drop in to do some overdubs.......very hands warm little toy..........now just have to pay it off)

JM47 Meekrophone

I'm glad you brought up the JM47. I wanted to do research on the Joemeek TP47 Trak Pak Studio Mic and Pre-amp Kit. It comes with a VC3Q Mic pre-amp/compressor/enhancer.

I'm new to home recording but from the info I've gathered in these forums, I know that one mic is not gonna be the right mic for every situation. So you experts, INPUT.......I NEED INPUT.

George, do a search for the big thread on diaphragm size/polar pattern questions. That will give you a better idea of what you're gonna need.

Rip Rowan over at ProRec did a review on this mic. You may want to take a look at it if you are planning to buy one.

This is a little of his opinion:
"The sound is "scooped out" with a robust proximity effect, and a very bright top end. Although less harsh than some other similar microphones, the JM47 isn't going to win any smoothness awards... So, did I like it the JM47? It's usable, but not excellent. It's a good value, and better than some of its bottom-feeder competitors at the same price. I can recommend it, but, trust me, you're not going to be seeing engineers toss out their Neumann U47s in favor of JM47s."

Re: Joe Meek & Studio Projects products

Gianthands, I think you'd be better off with the Studio Projects C1, if you go to www.pmiaudio.com, you can check out both
Studio Projects microphones, and Joe Meek products.
There are also links to reviews.

George, regarding the V3Q, it looks like they'are coming up with
a new model soon. Looks like it will be the V3Q's replacement.

If you guys e-mail the owner of PMI Audio, Alan Hyatt, he's very
good at responding. He's at www.alan@pmiaudio.com, in addition
to being a member of this bbs.

Jomeek mic

Seems like a fine mic for home demo situations. The package with their mic pre is cute! I looked into that because it seems like a good value, but I decided to put that $$$ toward something more upstanding in a mic. For example, I can get a pair of SM81's for not much more than their kit. They're industry standards and Shure is an American company too( the Meekrophone is made in China).

However, if you sit at home and record into your computer(for example) the Jomeek package could be perfect for you. Especially if your not too picky about mic tone and just want any ol' large diaphram consenser for all around recording and want to get away from just using your trusty ol' SM57.

Just some thoughts.

There are actually two versions of the JM47. When it first came out, the price was too high for us to bring it in from England. At the time, we were distributing the BPM Microphone line until we found out the owner of BPM was lying to us.

When we first got in touch with 797 Audio, we brought in a model similar to the BPM CR-10 with some changes, named it the JM47 per UK's instructions so we could sell an affordable model using the Joemeek name. Truth is, our JM47 sounds better than the UK version from Soundking.

The TrakPak was put together by me to provide a complete tracking solution for a decent price, and we did very well with reviews ranging from amazing, to so so on the mic, but the VC3Q always got great reviews. So much for the consistency of reviews!

When we started work on our Studio Projects mics, our intention was to loose the JM47. You can get a VC3Q, and a Studio Projects C1 for around $429.00 to $450.00 at the dealer level. The Trakpak currently retails for $549.99, so it is my opinion your better off getting a VC3Q and a Studio Projects C1 for the same money at discount. The reviews on the C1 are not mixed and you would be getting a seriously better mic in the C1. They are more than amazing. The C1 is just a freak of nature...it is that good, just ask anyone that owns one.

As for the VC3Q, it will become the MQ3. The changes will be an added mic line switch on the front panel, and the new Current Sense mic pre. Yeah, it will come in a prettier box, and a free full version of Sonic Foundry Acid which retails for $299.00 as the new MQ1 does; click here to read about the MQ1 http://www.joemeek.com/mq1micromeek.html so if you think about it, it is a good deal.

We are 90 days or more away from the new model, so if your ready to buy now, you will get a VC3Q. I hope this answers some of your questions.

Shure is American......but can we be s(h)ure

T. Alan Smith,

During a recent conversation I had with some one in the mic manufacturing side of things, a couple of comments were "dropped" that would hint (and I use that word cautiously), that Shure are also using O/seas components in some of their most popular models. Now I cant prove it, and personally dont care but it would certainly come as no surprise.

AKG were also mentioned as sourcing from the same Asian country.

Peace.............ChrisO

Components

Like the lower-end CAD mics I mentioned in another post, I wouldn't be the least bit suprised if Shure didn't have their lower line mics manufactured overseas, or at least parts of them.

Another thing I was told recently is that when Shure mics
(capsules for example) don't meet quality requirements, they use them in a lower line of mics. Again, I wouldn't be suprised, but at this point I wouldn't bet the farm on it.

Could be, but personally, I don't care...

By the way, if I remember correctly, I believe The Axis awhile back said he had a VERY strong feeling CAD or at least the one(s) he had were from Soundking. I haven't a clue, BUT, when you read this: http://www.cadmics.com/about_cad.htm ... It'd sure be interesting to find-out the REAL deal... If they're accussing and doing themselves...! That'd be about as great as BPM! Maybe even better?

American Made, my ass... Ronnie... "I was, born in the..."
