I was thinking about getting this mic but i only heard one recording on it and it sounded amazing. I know joe meek used to have solid equip back in the day but im not too sure about their new equip. If any1 has any experience with this mic please LMK

For an inexpensive LDC it sure does have a pretty smooth quality to it. Not real hyped in the high end and the midrange is a little more buttery than most in its $$$ range. Good entry level mic.

Dude I love your freakin' user name...

No I don't have any real experience with one so can't give you any immediate info. We're going to be doing a bunch of comparison stuff soon but have been bogged down with other stuff.

I will let you know when we get around to it!

like the V67 with rolloff switches...

...it's been pretty well documented on this site (and confirmed by Alan Hyatt) that the JM47 shares circuitry design with the MXL V67 and the SE 2200A...both the SE and the JM offer rolloff switching which is not available on the MXL...all are excellent entry level vocal mics...the V67 being the least expensive...you can't go wrong with any one of the 3 for the price...I owned all 3 and recently sold the JM due to my personal preference for the SE version...I believe there's a new version of the JM about to drop from PMI...not sure when it will be available though (check the PMI site for more info)...

Recommend Mic

Which mic would you recommend for me?

I'm using my computer for recording and i want a mic that will sound amazing i want a mic that people can feel my vocal cords moving. I only record rap and singing and some times a little R&B but MOSTLY rap. The will only be using this mic for recording vocals no instruments or anything. Can someone please recommend a mic that will give me a nice warm sound and at the same time not break the bank. I'm looking to spend about $180 shipped for a mic but may increase it if the advantages are much greater. Please only recommend mics you have experience with and if you don't mind why you recommend that mic over other. TIA - sorry for all the questions but i would like to get something worth my while than just spending my money on the first deal that pops up. Thanks all.

Uh-huh ... yeah, you see, the thing is, you want a top of the range mic for a bottom of the range price. So you need to change one of those. Assuming your budget doesn't move, you have to do what I do and try to get the best mic for your purposes and money.

I don't really record rap so you have to take me with a pinch of salt, but I would first try an SM57. Perhaps an SM57 plus a condenser a little further back to pick up a bit of detail. That might be interesting. Of the condensers ... I dunno what $180 fetches over there but I'd be interested in the ADK Vienna/Hamburg, the JoeMeek JM47, the SP C1 just maybe the AT2020. Alternatives to the current JM47 model are the SE Electronics SE2200A and possibly the MXL V67?

You can't get away from a need to listen to them. I had my first listens to the full JoeMeek and Studio Projects line yesterday and although I knew some of what to expect I was pleasantly surprised.

What preamp do you have?

I don't have a preamp yet, i have $250 to spend on a mixer/preamp and a mic, i only want something that will sound good not top of the line, i don't expect anything great just something to start me off with. I do want something that will be clear mostly, i was interested in a JM47 mic that i can get for $185 shipped with the shockmount, and a behringer mixer that i can get for $40 from musiciansfriend.

What do you recommend i go with? I new to recording so i have no clue.

NOTE: i record rap, singing, and R&B, that's all im using it for.

For 250.00 I would forget about the jm47 I had one and didnt think much about it. sold in just a few weeks, I thought it sounded harsh.
If I had 250.00 I would get the v67 or maybe the b1 sp mic I just got a at2020 and am kinda liking it. Those mics would only be 100.00 each.
And that would leave 150.00 for a M audio dmp3 preamp which is going to be alot better than that mixer you mentioned.
Just my 2 cents.

Can you post some links to these mics and mixer?

Also the only thing im going to be using on the mixer is the mic inputs and the phantom power, i don't need it for anything else.

Get the MAudio DMP3.

The MAudio DMP3 is a two channel preamp... not a mixer.

Without hearing you I obviously have no idea which mic would be best for your voice and style, but I would definitely recommend not skimping on the preamp. At the VERY least get a Yamaha MG10/2. Miss out the Behringers altogether, apart from the MIC2200 preamp which is actually ok.

But you should really be looking at either something like the DMP3, which is two decent clean channels of preamp, or the JoeMeek ThreeQ, which is one channel with EQ and compressor. The reason I say that one is that I had a good listen to the Meek compressors over the weekend and it definitely struck me that they'd be very well suited to rap vocals - you can get an awesomely aggresive sound out of them that would help bring up that 'vocal chords' thing you're after. Check them out, and I still think you should try one of the cheaper dynamic mics to go with it - Shure SM57, 545, Beyer Soundstar MkII etc. Make sure you're using a pop shield.

Thanks

I appreciate all the insight, im going to get the DMP3 no ?'s asked.

Thanks every one.

Yo Decipha! The DMP-3 is a good choice. With your current budget, you might find a decent dynamic will work as well for your purposes as a cheap condenser. Try plugging a Sennheiser e835 into that DMP-3- $80.-Richie

do you think a dynamic mic would sound better than a condenser?

I can spare about $120 for a condenser mic after i get the DMP3.

I just want something that will be worth my while even if it does cost a few extra bills, even if it is a little more expensive i would rather wait and get something with quality.

THANKS EVERY1 I REALLY DO APPRECIATE ALL THE HELP!
