Hey guys
this is going to be a sort of ongoing thread to review my new toy
The Joe Meek JM37DP

Heres the manual

http://www.joemeek.com/pdf/jm37_manual.pdf

It was a gift from a good friend.

so far i have only tried it on a few sources andnot in optimum conditions so i will be furhter testing it and will report back soon.
I really like the mic.
Its well made. great craftsmanship and materials.
It looks good.
There is no transformer in the design.
heres an mp3 of a few tiny home made amps.
Noisy cricket and the deacy for the chorus, ovation, fender pro with son of clay jones(way too low volume, its late at night)
only effect is a daw based reverb for the ovation. minimal processing so you get a feel of the mics ability.

I'll do some more recording too.
And Thanks to my friend for his generosity and just being a top bloke.
I hope you like it

Well that microphone does a great job, Rich.
I like the amp sound of the last clip.
Can't wait to hear more.

Man ... I wish I had a friend like that! ;)

I'll have a proper listen when i'm not on my laptop, but i really liked the second amp sound. i'm very intrigued to see how it turns out as i've only ever seen the Joe Meek mic's in pictures and never heard anyone use them or talk about them (maybe i hang out on the wrong parts of the internets and/or don't pay attention properly)

I have a pair of the JM37dp mics that I bought about 7-8 years ago on a special for $70 each. They're about double that now but I would pay the current rate to replace them (although, note my comments in this thread: https://homerecording.com/bbs/equipment-forums/microphones/cheap-condensers-353938/ ). I have some other "Meekrophones" (JM27's and a JM47) and there is no buyer regret with any of them. They do go one sale from time to time.

I think that the JM37 (cardioid only) is discontinued and I was always confused by the literature v. advertizing for it---did it or did it not have a transformer on the output?

If i get a moment soon i'm gonna stick the meekrophone in front of my cab again it sounds very impressive indeed.
Theres no transformer in my mic.

View attachment meekraphone To tape test.mp3Heres a new sample of me noodling.
I really like the results it think it would be very usable in a mix.
Signal chain.
MiM strat>yjm 308 overdrive> Fender pro Jn> Joe Meek JM37DP> Behringer tube pre (yep the cheap and nasty ones, seems to love the meekraphone)> Maxell XLI 35-180B 1/4" tape>playback to daw. No further processing. Except I cut out the bits i didnt like my playing so much.

The JM seems to just love a pre with a bit of colour.
I used one of the lesser coloured settings on the Mic200. knowing i was going to tape which adds its own colour too and saturation.
Anybody else using cheap starved plate pre's and getting the results they want?

Great sound Rich!
That meekaphone does a good job.

Have you used it yet on any vocal tracks or acoustic guitar?

no vocals yet, sounds great on an acoustic though, nice and detailed and not harsh.

I also have one, and use it with a 3Q pre/comp/EQ for tracking vocals. Great combination. ;)

Is the 3Q pre a meek pre?
is it coloured or tube hybrid or solid state?
i'm waiting on my new session singer to finish her exams and hopefully she'll be over in the school holidays to do some tracking. I cant wait to test it on a proper vocalist.
