Captain Sea Boots
Hey, does anyone know how Jeff Mangum's (of Neutral Milk Hotel) vocals were recorded on "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea?" I am strictly asking about gear. That has to be one of my favorite albums of all time. I know the way he sings is 99% of it, but I just love the way his voice was captured.

So I have noticed that some songs by the "Shins" emply a similar vocal doubling technique. One example is the song "New Slang." They are not 2 separate takes, but you can tell there are 2 vocal tracks. I have tried to emulate the sound with panning and delay. If anyone listens to either of these bands, do you have any suggestions on how to replicate the vocal sound?

Elliott Smith has a really great wide vocal sound on his stuff too. I tried to replicate it by using Logic's "sample delay" plugin. It works well. I don't know what a sample delay actually does though. It seems like it is basically a stereo delay that you can offset the L and R channels with. (err, whatever that means)

soooo, Hope that helps ;)
