Is it for metal??....

...I'd think it too old for high gain, but our bands guitarist is saying some big names are using that....

Most people that I'm aware of using this amp for metal are pushing it with a boost like a Tubescreamer or some other sort of gain/distortion preamp or pedal.

Regardless, you actually need less gain than you think you need.

oh dude, the jcm800 is a GREAT amp. i think you could use it for metal, and if you want a load of gain, put a tubescreamer on it. get it dude if it's a good price.

Locally there are one white, red and painted black head for sale.. They're asking a 1k for them, except the painted would go for 650..

it depends on what you define as "metal" haha as lame as that sounds. i have a jcm 800, and i love it, but its a totally different sound. its very raw sounding, and in a sense vintage sounding. if by metal you mean tons of lows and highs with really scooped mids and an ass load of gain, than no, jcm 800's are quite the opposite. like mentioned above, you dont need half as much gain as you think you would. for instance, bands like silverstein and thrice, use jcm 800's. i recently just saw a band called mayday parade that have a really thick sound and their guitarist used a jcm 800. theyre great amps, and have that one sound really. theyre not that versatile, but the sound they get is great.

What kind of metal sound are you going for?

I am not sure if you are going to get a "modern" metal sound with a JCM800,if that is what you are after. You can get a nice heavy medium/high sound with an overdrive in front of it, like was mentioned. This is the amp Zakk Wylde uses to get his signature sound, so if you dig the Black Label Type Sound you will probably like it. It has a kind brutal, raw kind of tone to it...

Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine uses one, as does Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top and Mick Mars from Motely Crue. I thought I heard the guitarist from Tool has in the past, but not sure on that one..

The head will be more for live playing than recording, And I think we're aiming to death metal (Hypocrisy) kinda sound there..

Btw. Has anyone tried the Fender Metalhead???.. solidstate, but powerful and assloads of gain, according to Harmony central reviews.. Cheap as fuck too.:D

Zakk Wylde uses em, Kerry King uses em (sig version)...I believe Morello uses/used em.

Plenty of metal players use em. They're very versatile.

I don't know if it was an 800, but whatever it is, it is not buy itself producing the "Tool" sound, Adam Jones likes to use multiple amps at once. I think Diezel, Bogner, and Mesa have a lot to do with the sound. I also could have sworn I read he had an ENGL or Egnater set on clean all the time, but I could be wrong.
