i just bought a j station and am giving up on my digital sounding zoom 606 after hearing the j-station only once convinced me quite easily. i love this thing.my question is has any of you j owners downloaded any of the custom presets from the johnson website and are they any good. im looking for some heavier tones like creeds dirty sound and metallica and maybe a good satriani and some good clean sounds, man i love this thing it rocks big time. my friend has a line 6 and i thought it was the best but the johnson is at least comparable. i know this dont replace a good tube amp miched but it sure sounds good. also does anyone use the foot pedal with there j-station for like live performances, it seems like it would rock live. i love the j-solo preset. thanks guys . tim pate
 
I have the J-station, which I use for home studio stuff.
I love it. I have downloaded some patches from the Johnson website, however you'll do better creating your own with the J-edit software. Hook up to a PC with midi cables and you're good to go. You won't believe the flexibility this unit gives you. And also, try to connect to your PC via the s/pdif output since that is
digital and gives you a much better recorded sound.
Make your own patches and enjoy!

how do you hook up the s/pdif to your pc im running into the line in on my souncard. its a 1/8 inch input is there a way to kook it up and take advantage of this great feature, and also when you hook up the midi on the back of the j-station there is a midi in and midi out does both have to be hooked up to pc because the only midi input i have on pc is my joystick port that i know of. thanks tim pate
 
The J-Station is very cool :cool: They used some of HR.com member Tom Cram's amps for modeling. The only thing that sounds like crap on it, IMO, is the S-PDIF out :( Very easy to tell the difference in sound between the analog & digital outs. Use the analogs & you're good to go.

If you are going to use it for recording into a PC, the s/pdif is the only way to go. try it both ways and see for yourself.

I've got a J-Station too and I love it.

s/pdif is the best wat to go if your sound card has a place to hook it up. If not, going into the line in works okay too.

I downloaded everything from the Johnson site and I even uploaded a few patches, so if you get them all, you'll have a few that I made. Some are good and some sound like ass.

Another place to download patches is HERE. But, that site doesn't get much traffic anymore.
 
Foot Pedal?

I love my J-Station too, but Johnson seems to be struggling these days. I want to get a footpedal board for my J-Station (like the J-8), but can't find any of the standard online stores that carry it (Mars Music, Musisions Friend, Zzounds). Anyone know where I can pick one up, or can someone suggest anothe model footpedal board that works well with the J-Station?

I went out and priced these (J-8 ?) and in my area they were $299.00 . It was a while ago so I can't remember what other manufacturers pedals also worked...but they were a lot cheaper.

Would a midi expression pedal do the same thing ???????:confused:

I'll try anything before spending that much for an accessory FOR something HALF its own price.
 
I'm a big fan of the J-Station for advanced digital recording.

Like most people I know, I regard the presets as a joke and never really appreciated the J-Station until I got it hooked up properly to a computer and ran its programming from J-Edit.

J-Edit and a good MIDI & S/PDIF hookup are essential. J-Edit is just amazing for getting your sound worked out in record time. If you're not using J-Edit, you can't even get to most of your real settings. In J-Edit, you can change everything in a flash. It's extremely intuitive and easy.

If you are doing digital recording, the S/PDIF out is the only way to go. If you use the analog outs all you are doing is taking the same digital signal that's going to the S/PDIF out and reconverting it to analog again. Reconversions are what you want to avoid in digital recording.

The J-Station is not as advanced in some features as the POD Pro, but it's way ahead of the POD for recording, and it's only about half the price.

Be sure you have the latest firmware, too.
 
I've done some recording with the POD Pro and I was not impressed. I think that the J-Station is a much better unit. IMHO
 
i havnt even gott a midi chord yet because there hard to find around here where i live especially on a sunday.so im just going by what the presets sound like and they are great in my opinion. i like the j-solo sound, very cutting lead sound.it sounds like digitech will continue to make stuff for the mighty j but they are putting it on the back burner to there own stuff of course. i loved my zoom when i first gott it but now that ive heard a j station and how well it works for recording i will never use my zoom again, well maybe for playing live it will be ok but it is plastic and may get broke or somthing. i will get a midi cable today and download the latest software for the j and maybe download a few of the presets they have from the users on there site and make a few of my own. man gotta love the j i just hope it lasts me for a while because i can imagine getting it serviced would be a problem wright now. thanks for the replys and if youve done much recording with your j please post a link so we can all hear it. thanks tim pate

The technical features on the POD Pro are more pro-level, like the word clock synch and the added 48kHz sample rate, among others. The converters are better, etc.

Of course, we're talking about a unit over four times the price of a J-Station!

Well, that's definitely a minority opinion, but if you like the presets I can't wait to hear what you think of what you'll get in J-Edit!

The presets are just the tiniest tip of the iceberg.

Yes, but none of that means anything if you can't get it to sound the way you want it to.
 
pod smod lol. i dont know about you guys but i love this damn j station thingy. sorry i know ive said this a million times now and im on my way out the door to buy a midi cable wright now, i bought my j station used a t a small music store here in northern michigan, it came with the book the box and cakewalk guitar tracks and thats about it and i payed 100 bucks for it so now you see why im just glowing about it, yeah i coulve bought the pod and like i said my friend has one and they had one for 175 bucks but i couldnt see spending the extra 75 bucks even though the j has limited service and updates now the way i see it us users will stick together and someone will figure out how to make updates that are cool they always do. thanks tim pate, p.s by the way check out the stevie ray vaughn preset on the j station website that one of the users made it has a stream icon so you can hear it man does it sound awesome im so excited i just hope my comp will recognize my j station. see ya later guys. tim pate
 
Can I usse J-edit with a Mac G4. I haven't looked to see yet but thought I would ask. I am not a guitar player though I dabble with a Strat that I bought last year and about 6 months ago got a J-Station. I am a keyboard player and have many keys and modules. Once I get the edit thing going, I will try the J-Station on the keys just for the fun of it. Anyway, what about that MAC?
 
There's a v.1 version of J-Edit for Mac, but not the most recent on their download site.
 
Midi cables?!?!

I have had my j-station for nearly a year now (!!!), and am in love with the thing! It's simply amazing! However I have a slight problem hooking up the midi ports to my pc. I have an Audiophile 24/96 soundcard which has the midi in and out ports, identical to the ones on the j-station. I have been to several music stores and searched for hours on the internet and haven't been able to find a cable which will hook up my J with the audiophile via midi. I have been told that a 4 headed cable (midi) doesn't exist!

Does anyone out there have a J and the audiophile?? how the hell can i hook it up via midi? Do i just simply get a standard midi cable and hook the j input port to the audiophile out?? I am confused...
