A local music store is having a sale-

Shure SM57s for $75 and SM58s for $90. I've got one hundred dollars. Which do I buy?

Baby need's a new pair of shoes! :)
But seriously,invest in a 58. It's a pretty good mic.

what are you planning on recording... they are both good quality dynamic mics... sm58 would be better probably if your doing mostly vocals, 57 is common even in top of the line studios for snare and guitar amps among other things (notice i said common, not necessarily the best, but they are perfectly respectable).. post some more info and more people will get back to ya

I would go with the sm57. because it's great for instruments and could also double as vocals (not as good as the 58, but if PERFECT qualtity is not needed then the 57 is great)! Even the president uses the 57 when he makes speeches. Just remember for vocal when using the 57, put some kind of screen on it , like wire mesh or that soft stuff(i don't know what its called, but its the thing that newscasters have on their mics)
Hope I helped ya all. Oh yah, and if you want to know a way of cutting corners with mic stands go to my topic in this forum called "cutting corners with mic stands (it should be a couple of days old, so if you dont see it, just look under topics from the last 30 days and you'll find it. :)

Thanks everyone,

I would probably be using the mic mostly for vocals and acoustic guitar.

For vocals and acoustic guitar, I would make sure you test out whatever you are interested before you buy. The SM57/58 are solid, but if what you really want is an "in your face" bright acoustic guitar sound, you probably will want a condenser, but that raises the issue of phantom power, etc. For $100, that means a used condenser, assumes you have a pre with phantom powering, and access to used audio equipment in your town. Harvey Gerst has some ideas about getting used equipment cheap on his studio page:

If you want to buy only one mic new, the SM57 seems slightly more sensitive, but with my Spanish guitar, the nylon strings don't cut it--the sound is really dry. I was pleased with the MC012 for that purpose.

Has anyone tried out the RODE NT3? ($159 new).

For about $180 you can get an AKG C-1000. It's a condenser and it'll run on phantom power or a 9 V battery. I got two of 'em and I love 'em.
