i've got £400 to spend on mic pres

i'm thinking of buying some mic pres for my recording set-up which consists of an alesis firewire multimix 16 and a g4 ibook. i usually do live takes of the band (drums, bass, 2 guitars and vox) then do the usual replacement takes for vocals and guitars etc. ideally, i'd like to get the preamps for the kick and snare and vocals at least, so between 4-8 pres would be enough. is it worth buying less pres for more money or should i go for something like the focusrite octopre le, which would give me 8 channels. any advice will be most appreciated,
