I see deaf people
a great loss to the world :D

finished yet another guitar/singing song and just cant do the vocals...moved into a smaller apartment three months ago and apart from being pretty noisy, the walls are paper thin and my set up near the front door, so whenever I go to sing my bottle goes and I end up almost speaking the lyrics..

does anyone else have to deal with this? Its like my third shelved track that'll just sit there, and none are worth paying studio time, shit nothing I record is..

Just bought a new mic too....so with no singing means no guitars..ah well techno techno...bollocks... lol :)

Get a portable recorder, a clip-on mic stand and record the vocals in your car. I'm not kidding. Car interiors, though small, typically have no parallel surfaces (most surfaces are curved) and lots of diffusion. I've done it with ac gtr. Wail away. No one will hear you or bother you. Until you see the gun pointed at you through the window by the car-jacker, heh.

Do you still play guitar?

Singing's one of those wierd things that require supreme confidence in your voice. Some people are born with is (whether that confidence is misplaced or worthy (see American Idol audition episodes)), some people develop it and some people never get it. I'm still at the needing an empty house and still feeling self concious when I "Vocalize" my creations so I guess I have a long way to go.

If you weren't born with it think about this: when you first start playing guitar, keys or whatever your forte is were you confident about people hearing you or did you loose your bottle? Did you quit? Are you that certain you won't get our head around vocals in the end too?

Am I helping the world by encouraging you :)

Sorry Bud but what does this mean?

I lose all my confidence...Im not the greatest singer by far but I generally make up for it with confidence

thats actually not too bad an idea except the cars in a shared garage with no power... and can I really set up a condenser in a car??

I like the idea of something portable...then Id only need a venue of some sort

Ive sung all my life mate...talent shows as a kid..in bars with a guitar..karaoke, you name it

but when I can hear the neighbours fart and Ive already told one of them to shut down his stereo or it goes out of the window Ive not created the best environment for me to belt out some faux human league :o

I even do most of my tracking and mixing through headphones now...I mean we'll move by the end of the year or so...its just a pain...one song took me nearly a week to track, especially difficult with my playing skills

i do. every song i record. but then i realize songs without vocals are retarded and i quit being such a pussy and force my way through them. much like you should do.

Is there a university that teaches music where you live? Universities are usually open (well, the doors are) 24/7 and have well insulated practice rooms, for their students, that are suitable for recording. Your confidence should come back, with only a janitor barely hearing you (he probably has an ipod anyway) and electrical power won't be an issue.

Edit: forgot to mention... obviously, don't do this at like 2 in the afternoon. I doubt the teachers are used to see people walking into practice rooms with their recording gear!

hell no. apartments are for people that can't afford to own a house. :p

Tell me about it...I didnt mind in Toronto as the walls were about three feet thick and it was huge...but this place is like battery farmed chickens :(

as soon as the lease is up its moving time...Ill just be a midi mofo till then ;)

Might be an idea...my wife works for UCSD and that may well be worth looking into..I have a pretty portable rig with my laptop though I may look for a smaller interface with phantom if anyone has any suggestions??

thanks

I've always been a bit self conscious about singing, even as a kid singing in the choir. When we moved into our flat, I was doing some vocals with two friends. We sang alot together over an 11 year period so we lost our self consciousness to each other and we'd really let go. One day, one of my next door neighbours told me she'd heard us and she really liked it. She thought it was singing lessons ! Now I don't care and I go for it though there is a bit of me that wonders if anyone can hear.
While XLR's suggestion is a really neat one, Ephraim Zimbalist's {:laughings:} suggestion is actually the one that I think hits the nail on the head. While I wouldn't put it quite as colourfully as him, I think you do need to force your way through it.
Give up singing, the habits of a lifetime ?

DON'T DO IT KCearl ! ! :spank:

yeah I know...I dunno why it is here...but its like its some japanese apartment with paper walls...or maybe i should just set everything up and go to the pub and come back...because its bound to be quieter than i normally am lol

anyway Im trying to get four dance tracks together for some kind of imaginery EP and ive finished one...so its not like Im not doing anything...just not singing like some eighties reject :D

thanks grim

Though I'm okay with my singing and the sound of my voice, I cannot abide tracking it if there is any chance of anyone listening. I don't mind anyone listening to the final result, but the thought of people hearing me wail away, screeching and a-hollering gives me the cold sweats. So I have to make sure the house is completely empty and there is nobody within earshot before I attempt a vocal track.

thats me down to a tee...I wouldnt even sing if the wifes here...its not the fact that i hate my voice its people hearing it without music...take me to karaoke bar and they have to prise the mic from my hand..but not for strangers in my apartment block, acapella..holy sheet no  <shiver>

The car thing is easy.

Laptop or portable recorder, this to hold the mic, park somewhere quiet, and you've got a good vocal booth.

I sympathize with the apartment torture. Had a similar experience when we moved to a new area and were house hunting for a few months. I still dream about killing the guy upstairs.

Yup . . . specially if my wife's there!

However, just about everybody who comes in to record appears not to have that problem . . . and they will sing with gusto no matter who is there.

KC look into the zoom H4n record to it where ever using what ever - then down load to computer for mix down. It's even battery powered - with 2 mic preamps, with phantom.

phantom power??

good idea H :)

Edit: bit too expensive just to use for a few songs over the months :(

Look for one used.
Or sell the one you purchase once your done to recoup some ...it might equal a rental fee.
Or you will find uses for it for years to come.

How about phoning in your vocals from a phone booth or cell phone to your answering machine then record it/down load it into the computer?:laughings:
