my band's cd's already been released, but i'm really not happy with how it turned out. i feel like it's kind of muffled, and lacks punch. i wasn't going for a powerful sound or anything, but it's really not what i wanted. if anyone could please listen to a couple of songs from our album, and give me some input, i'd be very grateful.

songs two and three from our http://www.myspace.com/postalblue are from the album. you can stream them from there. the site wouldn't let me copy a link from there to here, i don't know why.

and here's a directly link for one of those songs:

it's indiepop music, by the way, influenced by bands like the the smiths, go-betweens, pale fountains, trash can sinatras, lilac time...

Mmmm....I liked this tune quite a bit.
Nice n airy--like flying.

Stereo field needed to be wider though.
A little on the mono side.

i think i only panned the electric guitars and the drums hard left and right. the rest was distributed inbetween. do you think i could get away with pushing more stuff wider?

what about eq? do you hear it muffled too?

Listening to Summer Is What You...this is nice, like it. I think the muffled sound you refer to might actually just be the drums, which sounded to me the weakest part of the track, sound wise. They were not contributing the energy. Around the 2.10 mark there was, i think, some kind of clash in the lower mids, some guitar stuff coming up panned a bit to the left that seemed to be fighting the vox - well, fighting something anyway.

Loved your singer's voice, and i liked the song, nice feel, this was good stuff. Hope the CD does well for you.

thanks for the input, garry.
the songs i did mix though were 'stand and stare' and 'being you'. 'summer is what you call it' was released in our first ep a few years ago.

I listened to "Stand And Stare"

It's a clean recording for sure. I wonder what you're not happy with? Perhaps the drums could be more punchy.....I agree with you there. Perhaps they could have just brought them up in the mix.

Greeat tune, by the way!

the drums sound a bit unnatural. probably because i gated the snare. sounds a bit electronic too. the recording itself sounds good, but not as good as a commercial record. i wonder what i'm missing.

i'm starting to think my mixing room, which of course is less than ideal, is really getting in the way. whenever i take one of my mixes to another system to test-listen, i get the impression it's not open sounding enough. sounds midrangey and muffled. i also haven't been able to get enough variety in my mixes so far. it always sounds somewhat repetitive and tiresome eq-wise.
