Hello everyone, this is a song I wrote a while back for my niece who was
going through a tough time. I recording this song with a drum machine, so I
know for sure the drums suck ass. After hearing some of the music in this
forum, I'm feeling pretty intimidated! I was just hoping to get people's thoughts
on the song itself, not so much the mix. BTW, I recorded the song on my new
Digi 002R. Thanks!

The drums aren't good though not too bad either. They should, however, be much further down in the mix until you have sorted them.
Your voice is fine a little distant but that gives it some emotional impact.
the guitars are OK. the progression is fine but a change in tone might be a good idea.
Is there a bass in this? there's nothing more distinct than a E string on the guitar so if there is one give it some definition - scoop the EQ for a 1st experiment. If there isn't a bass put one in.
You should think about adding punctuating percussion as well.
I don't know if the fade in is necessary - sound a bit dated.
Please post your update - I look forward to hearing it.

Nice vocals man! Maybe a bit too much reverb and a tiny bit high for my taste but pretty well mixed overall. You should pan out the harmony vocals a bit too. What was your gear? Other than that expensive interface! I'd like to know your settings, I liked this tone. Nice job. Very emotional indeed.

Man, the way you described it I was expecting much worse. This is pretty damn good. Of course real drums would help, but it's not that bad. Great voice, I like the interweaving vocals, too. I'd like to hear this finished. It soulds pretty good so far. Please re-post when it's done.

Cool song and very reminiscent of Layne. Like you are saying, hugs, not drugs is what she needs. Let's pray she don't end up the same way.

A.I.C............Nice song just the drums i thought could've been better.

Hello everyone,
Thanks for your positive feedback. I was kind of nervous there for a bit. Here's just some info on the song I posted: there is a bass guitar track, but I really cut out a lot of the bottom end because on my computer speakers, the bass seemed to muddy up the mix. I wasn't sure if I should thin the mix for computer speakers. I agree real drums would be great, however trying to find a good drummer to work around my schedule has been a real pain in the ass. I admit, I did go overboard with verb and it does sound a bit dated. Sorry, I grew up in the 90s, so bands like AIC and Crue haven't been fully flushed out of my system. As far as settings go, I ran all guitars through Amplitude. I would'nt normally do this, but I wanted to knock this out right away. Same with the bass guitar. The vocals were run straight into Digi's preamp, with a cheap MXL 992 mic. I used an SR16 drum machine for the drums. If I do go back a re-record this song, I'll be sure to post the whole thing, rather than just the middle.
Again, thanks!

Amplitude is just a plug-in that I have on my system. It's basically just an amp
simulator, much like Guitar Rig or Amp Farm. When I write music, rather than
mic my Marshall, I'll just plug my guitar direct with this plug-in.

I thought you were interested in comments about the song but all you talk about is the mix. What's up with that?

Excellant song composure. I like the vocal in the mix. I would bring the guitars up some to blend more with your voice they sound pretty good.

I have a suddgestion on the drum machine thing. This is only something to try. Don;t try using the drum machine to emulate an acoustic drum kit. I would try using the drum machine as it's own instrument. I don't know how to explain this better. Examples of this could be in the Billy Corgan solo album "the future embrace".

Good job man, you have a good sincere voice. You should get you a band and do a trent rez.

You know, it's funny you should mention that. Back in the day I used to listen
to a lot of Depeche Mode. I liked the eerie sound they had, plus Dave's voice
was killer. So when I first heard NIN and Stabbing Westward, I thought maybe
I could write some stuff along those lines. Hmmmm...
Hey thanks for taking time for listening to the sample.
