hi - i am renting a space that was built to be a studio. it has a big live room and two isolation booths. we turned one of the booths into a control room. the first acoustical problem that we have encountered is that the booths are not soundproofed - hardley at all. they were poorley designed and i think a lot of the leakage comes from the doors which were constructed of 1/8 plywood on either side of about 4 inches of styraphome. i want to put new doors in and i am looking for a design....
any input or directions to another post(i did search and read some very helpful things) or website would be great -
thank you - ben

Design don't matter. Make sure you use a heavy door so it can eliminate any vibrations going in or out of the booth. Also, dampen the door from the booth side with 703 perhaps.

door design

because the door has to be so thick(4 inches or so) to fit where old one was, i was thinking of having 2 thick sheets of ply-wood with a cavity in the center(created by using 4 2 x 2's at the edges, in between the sheets) stuffed with some type of insulation - will this work and if so what type of insulation should i use?
thanks, ben

or this...

would i be better off just using solid plywood (it would have to be several sheets screwed together) with absorbtion on the booth side? - thanks

Have you considered MDF? It's probably a lot denser so should isolate better.
