Is this too loud?

Seemed fine on my monitors.
Nice mix too! Sweet basslines!

I remember this song. Like the first mix.

Sounds good to me. I assume you compressed it more?

Only thing I hear that might be an issue in the outside world is the bass.
Could be fine you'll just have to play it around on different systems.
On the monitors it's nice and clean but sounds like it might get out of contol if I threw it in the old crew cab:D  :) .

Honestly I think playing this ong in my one ton crew cab could rip a hole in the space time continium  Not that I don't like the song. There's just something wrong with that picture.

Sorry for thinking out loud :D

Nice job. It's punched up nice.

No, not too loud. The highs sound good but under 400 Hz it's too compressed IMO, robbing the bass line, otherwise very cool, of personality.

Sounds too compressed here too. There's some kind of click/tap (conga?) that's kind of distracting. Maybe it's just me. I've never really listened to disco type stuff but I like the song. I like that you used natural sounding drums too.

WHOA! DAYUM! LOUD! Oh wait, lemme turn it down, I had it cranked. Ah, much better.

( :) Sorry, couldnt' resist)

OK, real comments now.

Bass is a little big in the mix. And I'm a bass player, so it hurts to say that. It was fine on the big monitors, but it didn't pass the car test. Tom mic on the right side clipped a little on acquisition... There's a little spatial distance in the keyboard parts compared to the rest of the sound, like the recording's vantage point is onstage between the drummer and the bass player, next to a vocal monitor that the keys aren't in. It's a minor thing, but I think it's the source of what I'm perceiving as a very small inconsistency in the soundfield. Love the singer. Love the solid, retro groove, almost a neo-ABBA thing going on, only funkier. I meant that as a compliment. ;)

same as what others have said....seems like the attack is too quick on the bass...yada yada...

just one thing...at :40-50...there's something that just doesn't sound like a drum..it's sounds like a clip. it's seems like its on beat 3...but not really. it comes back at 1:43.

the verb sorta separates instruments to be a bit un-natural.

but..i don't know anything...my sinuses are clogged pretty crappily.

I also noticed this immediately. First appearance is at 40.235. It is at 3/4 in beat 2. I doesn't look like clipped. Could be really bad EQ'ing or mic'ing. If it can't be fixed for some reason, I just would leave it out.

The kick is clipped a bit, thus, yes, it's too loud. I'd try a master at about 2 or 3 dB quiter.
The snares sound strange to me, too. I suspect bad compression settings.
Did you try a mix without any compression? I could imagine it working with this kind of music.

Hmm, the offending clicking in question is a conga loop. It's strange that I never really noticed that it sounded a bit odd untill you guys pointed it out, now it's really annoying!

I will have a bit more of a fiddle with the track and take some of the other comments on-board.

Thanks guys

Dave

The louder parts of the mix are at around -10.2dB RMS average which is a good level for your mix to be at. Nice thing about this mix is that it doesnt look like a square wave.
You could push the volum up more I think withouth causing too msuch damage, but IM sure some MEs on here would disagree. :)

Hi

I've mixed it again, this time muting the whole conga track as it really didn't work anymore. It sounded good in previous versions of the song but now for some reason it's just a distraction. I've played with the reverbs a bit too.

Here it is:-

Let me know if you think it's an improvement.

Thanks

It does sound more open as far as my memory goes. Is the old mix still up for an A/B?

The vocals have more of a space in the song now. Love her voice! :D
Some of the quiet airy words she does on a few high notes are a little too quiet. I would probly manually edit them to bring them out a hair more. Her vocals are very dynamic right now and given the choice between losing that to compression or leaving it alone, I would leave them alone.

Groovy man :D This is a catch song! Not my style at all, but I still find my self grooving.

Have you played this on other systems to see how the bass holds up?

Hi Fruedian

The old mix is now here:-

I play all my mixes through my monitors, through a pair of crap computer speakers that came free with Half Life 2, and in the car on the way to work. I can't hear any problems with the bass in any of them. I am a bit of a bass head to be honest though!

Oh I'm a bass lover too;) so long as it stays sounding good on most systems.
Just wondering if it had been taken for a test drive ;) . Sounds nice on my end. Thanks for the link.
