okay heres what i plan to have as my set up:
PC:
1.8ghz Celeron
512mb ddr ram
60 gig hard drive

Software:
Cubase SX

Soundcard:
Delta 44

Outboard:
2x Behringer ultragain pro mic2200 (used as mic preamps and di for bass)

Microphones:
Behringer C-2 Pencil Condenser Stereo Matched Pair
T.Bone Microphone for roughly £60 or studio projects b1
Shure sm58

okay, what i need to know is is this a worthwhile set-up? will i be able to produce quality recordings.. good enough to be chosen over £40 a day studios?
i just want to get an idea of the quality before i start spending my money :)

This should certainly get you by. While a lot of behringer stuff is considered rubbish some of it isn't bad and as long as you got a piece of gear from them that has been put thru decent quality control you may be surprised by the sound. John Scrip from massive mastering did a recording of an orchestra using the same behringer pre's and it really sounded good. If you have the talent for this biz then you can really make what you have shine but it takes some practice and work. I'd say for a starter set up that isn't bad you might wanna upgrade in the future. What kind of recordings are you going to be doing? You'll want to consider that, you may need monitors although I'm for saving money and getting a decent pair, you'll need to take your room into consideration also. Just give us as much info as possible to make sure you aren't buying something you don't need.

erm... well im going to start off doing acoustic recordings of bands,
so thats 1-2 acoustic guitars, 1 vocal, maybe a bass or electric guitar (dub) if its neccesary.
eventually once i gain a bit more skill i will prob go into local bands real demos, so doing each instrument at a time : 2 guitars, 1 vox (plus a screamer as well), 1 bass, drums.

the room is pretty small maybe 4x4m.
for recording i might spill into another room to reduce leakage

RAM is cheap, and it looks like you could use it.

edit - oh, and maybe another 58 or a 57

yeah ill prb get another 512mb of ram, it could be quite neccesary at some point :)
