the roland vm-7100 digital mixer is listed at $1,463.
they say that price is for the following- VM-Basic-71 Automated Digital Mixer includes: VMC-7100 Console, one VM-7100 Processor, one VM-SP71 Side Panel Kit.

list price is $4,990.

now, am i missing something here or is this REALLY cheap? what's the catch?

They are coming out with a new Studio Pack Pro that is a step up from the VM3100Pro system. Maybe they are changing the price structure to reflect the new line. That price sounds about right although I never priced a 7100 system.

what i find intriguing is that even the vm-7200 is priced at $2,400, which is less than half the price of a new yamaha o2r, which is the unit the vm has been designed to compete with.

Hey Postalblue I just went through all of this. Just keep in mind the vm 71 basic package includes the smaller version of the unit shown in the picture. They actually show in the pic the vm 72 basic package picture. Same features just one comes with 13 motorized faders and the other comes with 25 motorized faders the big brother of the vm 71 basic, also it only has 10 inputs instead of the 20 that vm basic 72 has. I just received the roland video instruction manual I suggest looking a that to really see how incredibly powerful these units are. They sound great. good luck.

FWIW I have the VM3100 and find it a great little project mixer. BUT I dont know that the DAC's, pre's and effects are really up to snuff with good outboard gear. They are not bad but they are not amazing either.

In light of some of my new education into the realities of cheap DSP I would look pretty hard at these units before purchasing for a Pro level mixer. If the 7100 is the same as the 3100 I would REALLY think hard about it. Chances are you would get better overall quality using a good analog Mackie or Allen and Heath.

I am by no means new to audio work but I am just getting a handle on a lot of the newer gear and learning some of the subtle differences and all 24bit digital gear is not created equal.

I have the vm3100 too. The RPC-1 PCI card is from M-Audio. The DAC chips on the card are Lucid (msp?) which people here say are good. I haven't opened up the vm3100 to see if the same converters are in the mixer.

There are DAC's on the card? The card doesnt do any DAC, it is just an RBUS port. All the DAC is handled by the mixer AFAIK.

That's what I thought too. I work in the circuit board industry and I looked pretty carefully at the PCI card for quality, component types, surface mount quality, if it is a multilayer, etc. There were a couple of the good size Lucid chips on it. No doubt. I installed it a year ago so it's been a while. Maybe the chips are not converters. I just assumed they were. What else would Lucid chips be?

Do you have the card from the studio pack or the Delta version? I think the delta version does have a few extra cables and maybe some analog I/O but the studio pack just has the RBUS.

As far as the Lucid chips you would probably know more about that than me. My guess is it could be for word clock or DSP.
