Is this latency???

I am using MusicCreator 2003 and am days away from stepping up to CW Home Studio 2004. I have been doing mainly midi stuff and have had no problems. This weekend I tried to record an acoustic rhythm guitar track over some midi tracks and I get that infamous 1/2 second delay. I did this about 10 to 15 times thinking that I wasn't as "on the beat" as I though I was, but no luck.

I remembered a thread about this, which I happened to print out, and the suggestion was to turn off the input monitoring, which I did, but still no luck.

Is this what I keep hearing about so much when I hear about latency? How can I correct this? Is this a common issue?

BTW I am using an Alegro sound card that came with the computer(that was built). I don't know what model, I only know that it's Alegro.

THanks.

Your best bet is to stop using the onboard sound. It could be latency, but I think its jus that your Alegro card has poorly written WDM drivers if any at all. The same thing happens with the onboard sound on my motherboard.

I suggest upgrading to a better card, preferably one that has ASIO driver support now that you will be using HS2004. A SB Audigy would be ok, but if this is something other than a hobby, your money is better spent on a M-Audio Audiophile or Echo MiaMIDI. Both can be bought for around $140.

Thanks man. By this weekend I will have HS2004 and one of your aforementioned suggestions in place.

When I install the new soundcard will I need to disable the onboard?

I'll let you know how it works out.

What is a WDM driver anyway? I came across this while looking at the CW Help file.

Sorry, one more thing.

Are you talking about the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 because there is also a USB Audiophile soundcard. I am a little skittish about USB because I have read about incompatabilities, etc.

I am recording as a hobby only, but I am looking for a decent sound. I understand about computers, but I'm not a total tech head as far as this stuff goes, so bear with me and I appreciate your help.

WDM stands for Windows Driver Model. It allows direct communications with the hardware and better overall performance than the earlier MME drivers did in Windows 9x.

I was referring to the PCI version of the Audiophile.

Went out and bought HS2004 and the Echo card. Will install them hopefully tonight.

Thanks for your help.

I went out and bought the Echo MIA card. I am having a problem which I posted to the Hardware, etc. forum. I know cross posting is frowned upon so if you have a chance(and if you know about the card) take a look and see if I am f*cking something up or not.

THanks

posted my problem on "Computer Recording and Soundcard" forum.

THanks

I have the Audiophile. It has RCA inputs and outputs. I just run the outputs to my powered Alesis monitors.

The manual available on the site doesn't seem to help much. I don't have much experience with TRS connectors. You cannot connect headphones unless you run it through a mixer or separate headphone amp.
