Is this how you mix your drums?

Saw that, it's hilarious. I don't have analyzer software, so I guess I'm stuck using my ears.

Before I go and download all of that, what makes it so funny?

Some knuckleheads took it upon themselves to post a 30 minute "tutorial" on mixing drums. They take weak tracks, and manage to get them to sound bad. Mixing with their eyes, eq-ing isolated tracks, trying to remove snare from the kick track with subtractive eq, bull-to-info ratio of about 3:1.

Not me.

No, but I'm way too lazy to use lots of mikes and gear on separate tracks. If I put an omni overhead and bother to stick another one in front of the kick, too, I figure I've done plenty. If I'm feeling really crazy, I might put another omni mike overhead. Pathetic, really, but it gets the job done for me. These days, I have a lot of other cheap percussion stuff that gets used at least as much as the kit, and then there is the DrumKAT.

Cheers,

Otto

yeah i've watched that before, and i couldnt stop laughing 4 minutes into it, when he pulls up the analyzer and is goin on that...

then the guys are discussing the proper order to mix drums in...... what assholes they are.

actually, it was very comforting. their mixes sounded as bad as mine, and they think they have skills superior to others, therefore they needed to make a video of it.

i love how he's like, yeah we got a U87 or soemthing like that as a room mic..

friggin big shot can make drums sound like shit with a u87..

the only thing i picked up from that was to try using an SDC on snare, i'll admit, it did add a little punch that the 57 lacks. but honestly, woopdy doo..

and meanwhile, the dudes ass is hangin out of his pants. Exactly the kina guy I'm gonna listen to. (insert sarcasm here)

lol. mix it so it looks pretty on our analyzer. that's rich.

Wow taht sounded bad :D

I`ve seen a few when they demonstrate Guitar pedals out of the box, I looked as if the guy opened the box for the first time.

I'm at a school with a recording program, and I know plenty of guys like this.

They learn all this theory but have no idea how to correctly use it, regurgitating information that has no relevance to the situation.

I've had plenty of conversations with upperclassmen about recording and half the stuff they say is incorrect or irrelevant.

Not that it's the school's fault, just cocky kids who think they have the answers.

i'd like those losers to read this thread, as we rant at them.

someone send them an email on behalf of all of us here at HR.com and tell them to go play with each other or something.
