I posted a question a few weeks ago about the dreaded "error 7" / head cleaning, etc... Well I had my ADAT XT20 sent off to be fixed and got it back yesterday. The guy that my tech sent it to (an Alesis tech) did "everything" to it apparently. Replaced the chip, idler wheels, adjusted tape path, updated software (?), etc. Supposedly back to new. Yay.

Now my next question. the tapes that I've been using (only 2 so far) are Maxell SVHS and although they don't say ADAT on them, they say "for professional use and digital audio" and are "back coated". I don't want to continue using these if they're going to screw my ADAT up (again). I'd rather scrap them and start new with EMTEC's. What do you think?

When my machine stopped working, I was checking out some demo's from a friend who's tapes apparently were crap (not the music, but the tapes). Won't be working on those. Thanks guys.

I use the Maxell broadcast stuff... I bought a batch and found it good -- but since I bought the Maxell batch, I've also been buying BASF (Emtec) preformatted -- except for 5 tapes from a bad formatting run (which BASF-Emtec promptly replaced), they've been excellent!

I have had nothing but problems with BASF preformatted tapes, even after they were REformatted.

The Maxell Professional series stuff has been rock solid for years for me.

Good luck.

I had similar problems Ed -- there was a couple of large batches of pre-forms that had a tape formulation error causing improper formatting - even if re-formatted (don't ask me how!)... anyways - Emtech replaced all my faulty ones and I haven't had a problem with any since then...

(They knew it was the formulation issue by the serial number of the tape batch - printed on the outer shell...)

Thanks guys. I'm still questioning if the Maxell 'Professional' tapes that I have are OK to keep using...

They say... Maxell Professional SVHS ST-126bq (NTSC) and SE-180bq (PAL SECAM), broadcast quality videocassette, suitable for high quality picture recording and digital audio. Back Coated.

Whadya think?

I have those -- they're very good tape..........

Yup, I agree. Good tape.

Me and ol' Bruce agree sometimes....;)
