Is there a HUGE difference b/w 44.1 and 96?

I can't get cubase to work in any other format than 44.1 khz, is that going to really put a damper on my recordings? On the sample rate pulldown menu it ony says 44.1 when my card is set to 44.1. WHen i set the card to any othr sample rate, the pull down menu doesnt give me any options.

Is it going to sound that much worse than if i did 88.2 or 96?
 
No, not really. The higher sample rate will give you a little more headroom with effects and such, but no big deal. The average listener will not notice any difference in the recording. In fact I myself cant hardly tell a difference. I generally stick with 24 bit 44.1 KHz.
 
Ok, rad. I'm doing 24 bit also, not 16. I'll have to dither down later though, right? And that causes a whole other set of problems it seems.
 
I do my recording in Cakewalk, 24b/44.1. My gear allows 44.1 or 48, and I could never tell much if any difference.

Cakewalk with dither from 24 to 16, but I typically make a stereo 24 bit master mix from Cakewalk, then use SoundForge to "master" it, and then save a 16 bit file from that.
