I got my new mars lustbook yesterday and i spotted a new recording tool called a studio pack. is anyone using it yet ? does anyone recommend it?

anyway it looks like a good deal at 700.00 us.

Yeah, I saw that and was about to post the same question when I saw your post. I would imagine the mixer's good, but I've never heard of Roland RPC software. Has anyone here? I tried to perform a search for it on this site, but "RPC" is apparently too small to be searched for.

The deal sounds a little too good to be true, but you never know. Anyone? Anyone?

The software is emagic, but the box said it works with soundforge and cakewalk. I have a vegas program by soundforge.

but the emagic program that it comes with is propritary.

Roland rpc may be just the drivers for the card. but Im not sure.

Right now I'm using a korg d8 I got a month ago and I will sell it when I get the Roland stuff.

I can't believe nobody else saw it.

Okay, they just shipped last week. I bought it Sat and installed it.

New Dell. PIII 1 GHz, Intel chipset, 256 RAM, ATA 100 HD for the OS, 40 GB Ultra 160 SCSI for sound files. Windows ME. Sonar (did not install the Logic that came with it).

It installed perfectly and has WDM driver.

It was up and running very fast. No problem at all.

The WDM driver and the PCI card are from M-Audio which have a good rep. The A/D, D/A chips are Lucid which also has a good rep on this message board.

So, it is a combo Roland/M-Audio package. This LCD is backlit (a must) but is small (what else is new). I did some recording with 4 tracks at once. No problem. Will do 8 soon. Sounds great to me. I am not a big fan of Roland effects but the compressor and limiter will be nice for snare and kick.

The mixer looks deep. But if you're familar with the VS recorders, no problem.

Cons:
Only two XLR inputs, the preamps may not be as good as a Mackie but I don't have $2000 mics or UA compressors either. The way the log taper pot for the preamp is set up makes fine adjustments hard with a very light signal. No biggie though.

Records only at 44 KHz. 24 bit. That funny because the RPC-1 card (M-Audio remember) supports 96 KHz. But unless you have a acoustically designed room with Neuman mikes and UA compressors you'll be just fine.

I thought the web site said 96 sampling rate. Is it posible you are configureing it wrong. It still sounds like a deal to me.

having a 96 sr may come in handy because i want to install a dvd recordable. Ive seen them in magazines for under 500.00 and they can be used as ram. 4.3 gigs worth.

Sounds promising. I've got a 4 or 5 year old VS-880 and I'm curious to see whether switching to this new system will broaden my recording possibilities (more tracks, for a start).

Are the effects the same as the VS effects? I've been pretty happy with those on my 880, so that would be great.

I just bought a PII that I hope to do my editing and burning on, so I'm collecting as much info as I can. I'm probably going to get Sound Forge for editing and burning purposes (I believe). I wonder how you could make the transfer of the songs from this Emagic program into Sound Forge? Any attempt at such a thing yet? Or will Emagic perform those tasks?

Darrin, I am looking at the mixer manual and there is a sheet added in by staple. "Master clock (sample rate) of the VM 3100/3100Pro is fixed to 44.1 kHz." The specs in the back say 44.1 KHz too. Now, the RPC-1 manual specs say sampling from 8 to 96 kHz, 24 bit 8 channel in, 24 bit 8 channel out. Speaking of DVD, I've been thinking about Dolby 5.1 sound. Wouldn't it be great to have five channels to mix on? Imagine the bloated projects I can do! Hmm... a synth creeping in on the right back channel that blends in with a different, but similar, synth part on the front stereo pair. The possibilities are fantastic. Still, that wouldn't help a poorly written or recorded song. Oh well, it still cames back to talent after all.

Sir M, the manual for the effects are copywritten in 1999, for whatever that's worth. There are are tons of effects and look like the ones that come in the VS. Not sure though. I have no idea about SoundForge and EMagic stuff. I plan on sticking with Sonar for everything, recording, sequencing, mixdown to stereo. I know CW PA 9. The Logic version included in the Pack has a max of 24 tracks or something, not even sure if there's a sequencer in there. I sometimes need more than 24 for my bloated, overdone projects. I already had Sonar installed and didn't want any conflicts. I plan on keeping this computer clean. No games, etc.

I think that cakewalk pro 9 did 5.1 so sonar should as well.
