Is the new mix an improvement?

I've been sick and can't do much, so remixed this song to take out some annoying bass frequency and mud (I realized I mixed this when my trusted headphones broke and had to use spares, and all the sudden it had so much bass and mud!). I also gave a small .5db boost at 8k, which was surprisingly audible.

Can you share your thoughts on the new one compared to the old? Thanks guys

I know there's a few performance issues, but I didn't redo anything since I only had the rendered master to work with.

Yeah, you got rid of some of the mud, but the high boost has really boosted the vocal too loud.

The new mix is much clearer and I like the presence boost on the vocal. It just somehow has some more "airy"; element to it. But it is a bit too loud now.

I don't think the vocal is too loud, personally. This is fine for me.

You need to work on getting your low end under control. There's less mud than before, but there's still some. If you're not high-passing already, try it. I high pass all my guitars at 100 and may bass at 50. You're getting a kind of dissonant rumble somewhere. It sounds to me like unmuted strings, either on the acoustic guitar or the bass--I'm guessing the latter. If so, you might need to work on your muting technique. A piece of foam under the strings, right up against the bridge, will help. I'm hearing some bass notes booming out, but hey--could be my room!

thanks, guys.

robus, so i think the bass is a mess because my usual headphones broke and i mixed it on headphones that have no bass response, so i kept boosting it. it was just waaay too loud. i didn't realize it until too late after i lost the mix files and only had the rendered mixdown. so i think it's the volume in this case not the filter. i low pass everything, always -- bass between 60 and 80 usually and guitars at ~125.

Seems a little clearer and the vocal is a bit more prominent, which I like. Both mixes seem a bit on the dark side, I'd probably try it out a bit brighter.

Man, your vocal delivery towards the end there is just so cool. I listened to this a bunch of times and really enjoyed it. Just a very earnest sounding performance which counts for a lot. The timbre of your vocals is perfect for this I think. The lyrics are awesome. Can't believe I've never heard this song before.

Anyway, in a battle of two somewhat dark, muddy mixes, I almost prefer the first one, but they're both cool in their own right. Too bad about some of that vocal distortion...I really thought the vocals were so good when you started to kind of belt it out towards the end, but it's too bad you couldn't have harnessed some of that for the first section where I felt the pitch was distracting on some words...

But really, this was pretty cool, and I'm glad you remixed it or I never would have heard it.

that's awesome you liked it, heatmiser.
i hold back b/c of neighbors a lot, so when i let loose i guess it blows up mics. haha

yeah maybe i will just stick to the original mix. if you listen to the beck one make sure to go for the old one where he fingerpicks it instead of strums it. it's so much better and probably his best tune.

This song is really cool and the remix version sounds really professional to me. I think you got the eq right this time.

Your vocals towards the end reminds me of Graham Coxon.

A+ to this mix, man!
