And, if it isn't... how do you tell which one you have?

My soundstar mark II mics are marked M400 - mine even came with a frequency plot. If your mic is missing the model number around the base and you're afraid you were sold an M300 -

The M300 has a silver band around the shaft of the mic and a larger collar. Search completed items on ebay for M300 and soundstar and compare the pics.

My Soundstar II is also marked M400. I have an M300, too. On the M300 you can unscrew the whole basket like on a SM58. On the M400 the basket consists of two halves, you can't simply unscrew it. There are a couple of screws in the ring around the basket. When you remove those, you can lift the upper half of the basket.

I've personally never seen an M300 marked Soundstar II. But in case those do exist and you've got one, dont worry. The M300 is a fine mic, too. I find it hard to say which one I prefer.

Hmm. I have the silver band, no number around the base AND three screws in the ring around the basket. The ring definitely has Beyerdynamic Soundstar MKII on it. So maybe I have an M400 that's got an M300 shaft.

Mine is pretty identical to this one

The switch is on the converse. Is yours flush with the body, like mine, or does the mounting protrude?

No, wait, there is a number. 15449.

Thats a pretty old mic - don't worry thats the right one. The number is the serial number - a good 60000 less than mine :)

My switch protrudes. :)

My SN is 48260 and the mic is absolutely mint. Doesn't say M400 on it anywhere though

I know one of you is just itching to sell me one for next to nothing ;)

Mine's mint as well. These mics are obviously built to last :D

If people like chessparov would stop recommending them you might be able to pick one up cheap :p

I wonder if Han could educate us on the mysteries of the Soundstar series? :)

True...true.
Just try to mention them now only to those with limited budgets, not George Masenburg!

The truth is there are so MANY excellent vocal mics now for "under $200".:)

It's mainly just a choice of what engineering challenge you want to get involved with (de-essing, EQing,etc.). Although I can get high quality sound out of a humble SM57, the Beyer demands less technical ability from me.

I believe that picture is the one I got sniped from me on Tuesday.

Yeah sniping has taken some of the fun out of ebay, but if you cant beat them - join them.

You didn't get sniped... you got outbid by a guy willing to pay more than you. So what, if he did it at the last minute.

You were outbid. That's all there is to it.

I knew that was coming. I wasn't referring to the dollar amount as much as the fact that the winning bid came with 2 seconds left in the auction by a person who hadn't previously engaged in the bidding at all. But this isn't adding anything to the discussion, so I'll leave it at that.
