Lawson L47MP

I have a home studio and have used a Lawson L47MP for almost 3 years. It is a physically large mic and requires a beefy mic stand to avoid tipping over. The build quality is superb and like a tank. The variable polar pattern on the power supply is handy to alter the pickup pattern of the mic. The sound is very detailed with a nice airy top end. Great for vocals, acoustic instruments. It is not a U47 clone. The tube, transformer and diaphragm are different. The capsule is designed like an M7 but has a 3 micron Mylar diaphragm instead of the thicker PVC in the original (and still Gefell) M7 capsule. I have never used a "real" U47 but I do have a newer Neumann U87ai and the Lawson is better for vocals in my experience. The Gefell M990 tube mic I have is closer to the Lawson in sound. If you are interested in the Lawson, I think you can demo the mic with a return policy from the company. I can't imagine anyone who is looking for this type of microphone would send it back!

Good luck with your search

Yes, IMHO, it is worth every penny. It is a stunning vocal mic on quite a few singers and is well built. What's not to love?-Richie

P.S.- Note that my only experience is with a MKII.
