Here is a paper that I wrote for complete newbies to home-recording. I think some will agree that ALSQ is all a home-recording engineer needs, and anything else is chasing after the wind and taking crucial focus off the most important thing...

THE ACCEPTABLE LEVEL OF SOUND QUALITY

thanks bulls,

I spent a lot of money unnecessarily listening to so-called pros. I'll be satisfied if I can help just one person focus more on music and less on audio.

That was a great article - thanks for sharing it with us. It is easy to get caught up with the technical side of things and lose sight of what you're actually trying to acheive - namely make music people will enjoy listening to (in my case at least).

wow, I am so flattered that you guys found it helpful. I did not expect any one on the level of spinsterwun or manning1 to comment.

Thanks

Thanks for the article. I see some of these great home studios and feel a bit inadequate at times. Then I remind myself to spend less time reading and dreaming and more time playing. Thanks.

excellent article.

hey (b)manning good to see you again.

(just to keep the mushiness up)

i think that's your shortest post on the newbies board tho, right?

No disrespect to all the great and knowledgable people I've learned from but as a newbie I'd say this is the best piece of writing I've read on this BBS.

CyanJaguar, can I put a link to your piece into a piece of work I'm doing right now? I'm writing a website which may or may not get published that is supposed to be an intro to recording. I'm getting marked on both the content and the design (which I have to hand-code in HTML!) and your piece gives me some good discussion points that will help me get some original thinking down. It's part of my music degree.

Reply here, or drop me a PM/email. I'll only put in a link but if you want proper crediting etc I'll need your details.

Thanks!

hey noisedude,

I sent you a pm.

hey Kevin,

thanks a lot for the kind words.

CJ - dunno if you ever got my PMs about it but if you're interested I linked to your article from here:

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/nikkeefe

It's also available as a newbie resource, I can spend time working on it if need be, just bear in mind that it's not flashy cos I had to code it from plaintext!!

CJ - Thanks for the encouragement, and perspective. Sometimes I get ..... 'distracted'.

hey noisedude,

that's a really easy page to read. forget about flashy graphics, this gets the job done- well done.

Jimmy D,

thanks. I really wish the article will help some people counteract the GAS (gear acquisition syndrome) that negatively affects wallets and emotions.
