Since I don't have a modem on my other computer should I buy the CD version of the SP1 update for $10?

Is the update really all that helpful? They were talking about it making XP more stable. True??

What shall a poor fellow like me do?

You can download SP1 as a single file which you can then re-install at your leasure. If your second computer is connected to the first via a network card, download that and then copy it over to the computer.

Check my post about SP1, it has the link in it.

Two main things in SP1 - fixes lots of security bugs, and includes a new feature (thank you Justice department!) that lets you remove Microsoft componants like Internet Explorer and use third-party alternatives if you like.

Umm, if you see the fine print, it actually 'hides' the options, doesn't remove them. The Gates story is that XP relies on a lot of core technology in IE/Outlook for its normal functions.

So though you can't see them, all the files are still there. Still filling up your hard disk.

SP1 is worth it if you are connected. if you're running stable, no need to move to SP1. Only if you are having issues which SP1 fixes.

As is the rule with all updates/patches/fixes/service packs.

it fixed almost all of my problems with ntrack and my delta44.
but, if you're running smooth, no need i assume.

however - why dont you download it and burn it to a cd, then run it from that?

You can burn it to a CD, but it will need to unpack itself, so you'll want to copy it to the system drive that you are upgrading. It's quite large, and takes about 20-30 min to run.

I can't download it because my audio computer doesn't have a modem.

I trying to download it on this computer but it says I need to have Xp already load and this computer has 98.

It sounds like you are trying to do a live update. To just download the file it shouldn't matter what the OS is.

I don't have the link to the downloadable file handy, it's at work and I'm at home resting a back injury. But it's downloadable from Microsoft, and I put the link into an earlier post here. Just do a search for recent posts in this forum with SP1 in the title.

You can download it and install automatically from Microsoft if you have it already installed, if you don´t you hace to use Express download or something like that, and the file is about 130 MB!!!!!!!!! It will take me about a week to download that with a 56k connection. Besides beware, there is a lot of flaming about the SP1 becuase it seems that about 20% of users who download it get more harm than good, it is not me who says this, look around, check the XP Forum from Microsoft. Just a thought though.

Umm, yes, I forgot to add the 130 MB size. On my 24/7 128 KBPS ISDN at work it took me about two days to pull off the download.

Yeah I'm spoiled - T1 connection at work, cable modem at home. :D

If I every had to go back to a phone modem, I'd just say to hell with it. No need.
