Is Pro Tools hardware specific?

I've searched a bit, but can't come up with a definative answer. Must you use Digidesign's hardware with any/all of the versions of Pro Tools, or can you use your own method of A/D input such as my Mackie mixer and my Echo Gina?

Also, if Pro Tools is not hardware specific, is there a free/demo version available that will run on Windows 2000 Pro or XP home/pro?

Or if you buy M-Powered Pro Tools, you could use an M-Audio interface.

Pro Tools Free only worked on 98 and it was an utter piece of crap.

Using Pro tools M Powered is pointless as you can only use ONE M-Audio device with it. i.e. no chance of running 4 delta 1010s with it, well...not even 2

You can use Digidesign hardware with other software though..
