I need monitor to mix my band songs (rock alternative with heavy guitars).

I was decided to go with the KRK rp 5 G2, they sell for 179$ each here in Canada ( 358$+13% Tx).

But today I found this deal for used KRK RP8 (older model) with Quik Lok BS-313 stands (won't use them i guess!) for 300$.

Are they too big for my needs?
Or should i buy the newer G2 model because they sound better?

Thanks

I just found the RP8 (G1/older model) also for $300 on craigslist a few weeks ago and picked them up. That's a great deal, and I would recommend them. If they're 'too loud', just turn 'em down. :P

You may want to get some stands to put them more at ear level (rather than on the floor pointing up).. but I suppose that'd work for now.

What about bass, do they have too much bass for what I need?
I'll be recording + mixing drums, heavy guitars (jcm 800, mesa, orange rockerverb 50) heavy rock alternative music.

I have read on another forum that they were good for DJ's but not for mixing..
Just wanted to be sure before I make my move.

thanks

IMO, you WANT an 8" monitor when doing anything with drums and/or bass. Now, whether the particular monitor you're looking at has a flat response or hyped low end, I don't know. The point of your monitor is to give you a (relatively) flat frequency response across its entire range so you can hear and make logical adjustments as you mix. The larger the driver you choose, the lower that flat response will go before it drops off. This is a bit different approach than say, house speakers where you buy a 15 because you want the house to rattle.

One thing to note is that the RP8s have a high-frequency level adjust knob, so if you feel that they are bass-heavy, you can pop that knob up to +1db for high-freqs.
To me, this isn't a great way of handling an issue of being bass-heavy, but maybe the only way of doing it.

I have mine set completely flat (knob-wise). I'm not seasoned in listening to various monitors, though, so I'm not exactly sure how much bass I should be hearing. It sounds pretty flat to me, though.

That is the key always use your ears. Unless they are damaged they will not lie.

Wait, is that last statement supposed to be ironic, or did you mean they "won't" lie?

Ya. I just fixed it Austin, thanks .... I had to much air to breath :laughings: I'm going to crawl back under my rock now.
