I have been using my beloved 414 on electric guitar amps it sounds great. I am a little concerned whether this will destroy the quality of the mic at all. I know that a local studio uses 414's on guitar amps, but other people i have spoken to are not so sure that it is so good for the mic.

Cheers

414's can take it. Unless you put them right on the grill and turn up to 11.

I put them up on the grill with an sm57 the result is really great. Especially when I double a guitar rythm tracks. I try to get the amp at a volume where it is working the tubes/valves though it is not cranking (If you know what I mean). I dont know whether that volume is ok or not. I want to feel confident that I can do this because I also use this mic for rooming the drums and vocals. CHEERS, mEGGS

the 414 has a 10 and a 20db pad on 'er for a reason! throw it on and put er pretty close. GORGEOUS FAT sound. I like mine a lil' off axis with a TLM back a couple feet (I usually have to play around with this one for phase/tone I want, etc). sounds huge. best of luck! the 414 is awesome on just about everything!

You won't blow it up even if you do jam it into the grill and crank the amp to 12... if you discover some clipping from the mic's internal amplifier engage the mic's internal pad... other than that you should be fine.

The mic should be fine assuming you don't do anything optional to it.

Man, if there's anything you eventually learn it's that you can use whatever mic your heart desires. All mic's have different sound characterics; therefore, you should never stick to just one.

Unless you like to paint pictures with one brush ;)

yeah no I meant the mic itself.. I like to use it with an sm57 and i am about to try it with some room mics as well. Love it. Should I definately use the pad though?

Using Neumann M149 to mic Guitar Cabinet

Hiya, How about using a Neuman 149 tube to mic a guitar cabinet? I don 't dare try it cos I fear it may be a bad idea if there's a chance of hurting the mic.

Has anyone used a M149 on a guitar cabinet b4?

Necro-post of the week!

Yes you can use an m149 on a guitar cabinet. Look up the specs, it will tell you how many SPL the mic will take.

I agree with the previous posts. It can definitely take it, and it'll sound awesome (this of course is assuming that the amp / cab you're placing it in front of doesn't sound like poo... cause no mic fixes that)
