I have a short question that I hope has a short answer. I am recording with an Fostex 380S. is it necessary to use a microphone pre-amp? Thanks.

I tried finding information for the Fostex 380S but couldn't...

You want a microphone preamp if:

- Your microphone needs phantom power and your mixer don't have this option.

- Your mixer doesn't have built-in preamps

- Your mixers built-in preamps sounds like crap

* OR *

- All these answers :D

Hope I helped a bit,

If it has an XLR jack and a trim knob then you are probably okay. That doesn't guarantee a super clean signal but it should be usable.
