Bored of Canada
Well, I'll start this off by saying that I just installed new RAM and a new processor in my PC. I'm sure it's better than what I had.

Got me to thinking about this "spare" laptop.
It's my sisters...well it's mine I guess since she gave it to me when she bought a new one.
It's a Sony VAIO (vgn-nr498e). She bought it back in 08. Windows Vista, 32-bit, 3 gb ram, 225 gb HD (im sure its not 7200 rpm), and intel core 2 duo t5750 @ 2.00 ghz.
and its pink
Oh, and there are 4 usb ports.

Now, while it certainly wouldn't be my primary DAW, I think it would be nice to have a laptop for recording on the go that could hang on its own. My as well put that endless supply of Cubase Le5 to use right?

Anyway, what I want to know is whether or not it is possible to upgrade this thing (new harddrive, ram, probably os unless vista can hang, cpu ) for less than $200-300? And if it is possible and worth it, what would it take?

My main recording computer is a C2D with 4 GB ram, you should be fine to do pretty much whatever you'd like on it. Get Vista off ASAP though. Even XP would run a ton better. Does it have any firewire ports?

Hi,

It's not going to cost money to give it a try, so I'd give it a shot and see what sort of job it does on the kind of projects you do. It might be OK as it is. Until you know what you're up against it's probably not worth spending too much time wondering about theoretical upgrades.

Even if it's not a flier it might do fine for recording ideas before you forget them, doing a bit of editing, or whatever. The words "Vista" and "pink" are definitely putting me off, and I'm not generally a big fan of trying to keep two different types of system in step with each other....... but who knows...

Good luck,

Chris

No firewire :/

Yeah. Both my laptops are vista. Though they're both not pink.
Desktop is a Win 7.
