cakewalk sonar really shines when you get into useing MIDI and softsynths and what not. Sonar has many features that, in my opinion, make it a fuller package than cool edit. For purely recording purposes though, cool edit, and moreso adobe audition, are great programs. I like cool edit cause its simple and straight forward. I find that getting up and running with sonar takes more time than in cool edit.

That said, i don't know if i would buy sonar just for its effects. you may just want ot buy a suite of effects insted for cool edit. any dx effects would work and if you wanted vst you could probably get a wrapper.

Yes! What minofifa said. Generaly, Cakewalk wins all the way in MIDI / softsynth area. If you just wan't more effects, then you better get 3rd party DirectX plugins.

(Somehow I have a feeling manning1 will come with his idea of "49 bucks PG music softwares" here... )

i happen to think cakewalk makes the best software out there for recording and mixing. i started on n-track and let me tell u, i hated it. then i bought PA9 (i know, I KNOW) and have never switched since. i did try Sonar 4, and i'm seriously thinking. seriously...
