Is BLUE worth it?

If you had the money to get one, would you?

If I would have had the money to get a BLUE Baby Bottle Mic for my first Microphone, I would have. But, of course, I didn't have that kind of money at first.

How many of you would like that as your first microphone, if that price wasn't a factor.

Although I’ve never used one myself, based on the samples I’ve heard (the 3D Mic CD, for one) and the reviews I’ve read, I’d rate the Mouse worth every penny for an all around vocal mic. You could probably got a new one for under $1100 if you “arm wrestle” some sales guys for a while.;)

Used on Ebay, I could have gotten one awhile ago in the $300-$400 range! To think, I passed that "Buy It Now" option up. Silly me.

It's probably a fine microphone on most musical sources, however, it's the old "try before you buy" story.
Could sound great, could be NOT so great on a given source.

If I was starting (new) over again, my "first" microphone would be either a Electro-Voice EV 635a or one of their "variable-D" design models, like the EV RE16 (live use), or EV RE20 (Or PL20).

Not because their necessarily "best", but because they're much EASIER to use for the novice. Virtually no pesky proximity effect to be concerned over. This is just from a vocal use perspective
(singer here) BTW.

I have a BLUE Mouse, and while I wouldn't consider it to be a "go to" vocal mike, when it works, its magical!!

If you're talking about a "Baby Bottle", I see used ones in that price range ever-so often. Keep checking eBay and the classifieds at all the forums. I'm sure another will pop up before long. One thing about buying used, if you decide you don't want it, you can sell it without as much loss.

baby bottle is a good "workhorse" okay for voice
not my first choice for vocals in that price range
audio technicas 3035 and up are better for most vocals
rode ntk or a stedman are nice too

Michael - What IS your "go to" vocal mic?
Thanks.

btw, as a first quality condenser, i'd suggest something from audio-technica. those mics are definitely worth the money. i'd suggest the at4040.

Well, it depends.
I'll usually throw up a TLM 103, an SM7, and the lowly V67G.
If none of those seem to work then its time to pull out the big guns! :)
I'll put up a Senn. MD441, a 77DX, The Mouse, and the SP T3.

Those round out my vocal mikes.

I guess I like the SM7 a lot. The TLM103, on the right voice, something not nasal but deep and full, sounds pretty good to me.
I wish I had a U87. :(

Michael, I like your RCA 77 better than an U87.

A Beyer M88 will sound similar to the U87, but with a mellower
"top". The trick is to back off that sucker so it starts sounding
"natural" due to the M88's massive proximity effect otherwise.
(Bob Ohlsson was the pro engineer who alerted me to this).

Plus it costs only around an 1/8th(!) used as that of a U87.
A recent article in "Recording Magazine" brings up how underated
the M88 is BTW.

Chris

Thanks for the tip Chris.
I'll have to be on the look out for one.

Anytime Mark.

I have the "TG" version of the M88, which makes it more practical
for recording and live use (built tougher).

Chris

Mark?

I'm Mark. He's Mike (or Michael)

It would seem my constant harping on about the wonders of the Beyerdynamic M201 has lodged in your subconcious, causing you to immediately think of me whenever anyone asks about a Beyer mic.

:D

Uh-oh, the secret's out.
I'm NOT perfect!

Sorry guys, I'm a little stressed out about a business transaction right now, hence the mistake.

Cool info, Chris. Do you remember which issue it was in?
