Is anything better than A&H for less than $1k?

Ok, so I just signed up to this board because I've been reading through it a LOT the past couple of days. I'm in the market for a new mixer for under a thousand dollars. From what I've read, I'm interested in Allen & Heath. I was considering soundcraft but I heard something about them being bought out by a company called Harmon, and turning evil and so forth. Anybody have anything I should check out before I buy? I'm fairly new to all this and will listen with an open mind.

Thanks,
Joe

There is nothing evil about Harmon at all. Just remember that Lexicon, JBL, DBX, Amek, Studer, Allen Heath, Soundcraft etc... are just a few of the companies that are related in some way to the Harmon distribution group. Personally, an Allen Hetah Mix Wiz may be the best console for under $1000. At least as far as I am concerned.

Thanks for your opinion. I didn't know that Allen & Heath were associated with Harmon. I heard that they weren't anymore (on here). The only reason I said that about Harmon is because of some things I'd read on here saying that they keep buying companies and then the companies take a turn for the worse (cheaper parts, less quality, etc.). Even a review I read at Musician's Friend before I knew what Harmon was. Anyway, in short...thanks.

What are you going to use it for?

If you aren't really going to be mixing you might be able to just get good preamps and take them into the computer.

But it sounds like you'll be mixing. A&H always works for me.

Well, I mainly need the mixer for my drums. I've got 5 mics now and may get a couple more. I don't really know anything about computers recording-wise and would kinda like to keep it that way...just a preference. Thanks for your input.

check out a used studio master. a lot of models around that can be found way under a grand...i sold mine for 300...bad on parts and such...but they sound great.

topaz's can be found for under a grand too.

both give you way more board and sound for the $...though the A+H is nifty...

see ya...

Oooohh. Used. Used anything. Big fan.
You can almost always get more bang for the buck (more for your money :p ) buying used

as always, IMO

guido #2 - let's face it - as clevelanders - we're broke as a joke. we couldn't afford new if we wanted to. :D

cool studio btw.

pax,

Mike

HaHa! You know it. My studio is a mud hut and I make all of my own mic cables outta discarded barb wire that I find down by the river!

Hey- how do you know my studio, Mike?

the river? that thing burned down years ago!

i've just seen yer name around for the past few years - nice studio layout, man...color me jealous...we're a funky one room deal.

OP - the older carvin mixers are pretty nifty too and can be had cheap. don't know the model numbers...ran across one a few years ago...kinda chunky.

A few years back I bought a Allen & Heath System 8 24 channel 8 buss for 960 bucks.

Try looking at older mixers. Soundcraft 400 series are pretty cheap and sound amazing compared to anything else in their used price range.

Try to get your hands on a used soundtracs. Something like a topaz 8 bus should be pretty easy to find and is a real bang for the buck.

Alright, I'll see if I can find some stuff out about those. Thanks.
